OET (OET-LV)And if anyone may_take_away from the messages of_the scroll of_ the _prophecy this, will_be_taking_away the god the part of_him from the tree of_ the _life and out_of the city the holy, of_the things having_been_written in the scroll this.

OET (OET-RV)And if anyone takes away any of this prophetic document, then God will take away their share in the tree of life and in the holy city that’s written about in this document.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Other examples of headings are:

Ending messages/announcements to endorse/approve the book

Final words to encourage the readers

Jesus, the angel, the Holy Spirit, and John conclude the book

22:19a

And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy,

And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy: This clause refers to changing the meaning of anything that John had written by:

  1. removing words that he had written,

  2. denying the truth of any meaning in it.

Other ways to translate this clause are:

if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy (NLT)

if anyone removes any truth from this book of prophecy

22:19b

God will take away his share in the tree of life

God will take away: The phrase take away poetically connects this clause with 22:19a. If possible, use the phrase take away here as well.

share: The word share refers to a part or portion of something. This person will not receive the privilege of eating the fruit from the tree of life. In other words, he will not receive eternal life. Other ways to translate this word are:

portion (GW)

shared right/privilege

the tree of life: There is a textual issue in 22:19b: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the word tree (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the word book (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. This phrase indicates that the tree is a source of eternal life. See how you translated this phrase in 22:14.

General Comment on 22:18b–19b

The warnings in 22:18b–19b are told to everyone who might try to change John’s prophecies. In some languages it is more natural to use plural forms. For example:

18bif any add anything to them, 18cGod will add to their punishment the plagues described in this book. 19aAnd if any take anything away from the prophetic words of this book, 19bGod will take away from them their share of the fruit of the tree of life (GNT)

In some languages it is more natural to use second person forms. For example:

18bIf you add anything to them, 18cGod will make you suffer…. 19aIf you take anything away…19bGod will not let you have part…. (CEV)

22:19c

and the holy city, which are described in this book.

the holy city: The new Jerusalem is the holy city because God will live there. Here the word holy indicates that the city is dedicated for God’s use. His people will live there. Nothing evil will live there. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

the city set apart

God’s city

See how you translated this phrase in 21:2 or 21:10.

which are described in this book: The Greek clause is literally “having been written in this book.” This clause refers to both “the tree of life” and “the holy city.” It is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

which I wrote about in this book

which are in this book

This clause gives more information about “the tree of life” and “the holy city.” In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that there are other trees of life and holy cities. It would also indicate that John only wrote about these trees of life and holy city. If that is true in your language, translate this clause so that it gives more information about them. One way to do that is to start a new sentence here. For example:

I wrote about those things in this book.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τῶν λόγων τοῦ βιβλίου τῆς προφητείας ταύτης

the words ˱of˲_the scroll ¬the ˱of˲_prophecy this

John is using the term words to mean what he has written about in this book by using words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the prophecy I have written about in this book]

Note 2 topic: translate-textvariants

τοῦ ξύλου τῆς ζωῆς

˱of˲_the the tree ¬the ˱of˲_life

Some ancient manuscripts read the tree of life. ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts read “the Book of Life.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of ULT.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τῶν γεγραμμένων

the ˱of˲_the_‹things› ˓having_been˒_written

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [that I have written about]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:6-21 This epilogue to Revelation contains utterances by an angel (22:6, 8-11) and Christ (22:7, 12-19) followed by a concluding plea for Christ’s return (22:20) and a closing benediction (22:21). The epilogue has a number of direct verbal connections with the introduction to the book (1:1-11), and it sums up important themes such as encouraging faithful perseverance, warning evildoers, affirming the authenticity of the prophetic message, and restating the nearness of Christ’s return.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
