OET (OET-LV)And see, I_am_coming quickly.
Blessed is the one keeping the messages of_the prophecy of_ the _scroll this.

OET (OET-RV)“Yes, listen, I’m coming soon. Whoever follows the messages of the prophecy on this scroll will be blessed.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Other examples of headings are:

Ending messages/announcements to endorse/approve the book

Final words to encourage the readers

Jesus, the angel, the Holy Spirit, and John conclude the book

22:7a–b

“Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book.”: The Greek does not say who spoke these words. There are several interpretations:

  1. Jesus spoke the words in 22:7a–b. For example:

“Listen!” says Jesus. “I am coming soon! Happy are those who obey the prophetic words in this book!” (GNT) (BSB, NIV, GNT, NASB, NLT, NET, NCV, ESV)

  2. The angel also spoke the words in 22:7a and John wrote the words in 22:7b. For example:

6c to show his servants what must soon take place. 7aAnd behold, I am coming soon.” 7b Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book. (RSV) (RSV, NJB, REB)

  3. The angel also spoke the words in 22:7a–b. For example:

6c to show his servants the things that must happen soon. 7a I’m coming soon! 7b Blessed is the one who follows the words of the prophecy in this book.” (GW) (GW)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).Aune (page 1184) supports interpretation (1). Osbourne (page 782) says “Christ speaks directly for the second time (cf. 16:15).” Kistemaker (page 585) says “the first person singular pronoun I points to Jesus.”

The Greek and the BSB do not introduce the new speaker. In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that the angel spoke these words. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

22:7a

“Behold, I am coming soon.

Behold: This word means “look.” The word emphasizes or calls attention to the words that follow. It is not a command to look at something. Other ways to translate this word are:

Look (NLT)

Listen (GNT)

Indeed/Hey

I am coming soon: This clause refers to Jesus returning to his people on earth. The Greek word that the BSB translates as soon can also mean “without delay” or “quickly.” Other ways to translate this clause are:

I am coming quickly (NASB)

I am coming without delay

See how you translated this clause in 3:11.

22:7b

Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book.”

Blessed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Blessed describes a person who is in a good situation. In the Bible, the good situation results from God showing favor/kindness to the person. Other ways to translate this word are:

Favored

How good it is

In a good/desirable position in God’s eyes

Shown kindness by God

See how you translated this word in 1:3 or 20:6.

keeps the words of prophecy in this book: Here, the word keeps refers to following what was said and valuing it. Believers follow the words of this book and value it. Other ways to translate this clause are:

values the words of the prophecy in this book

obey the prophetic words in this book (GNT)

prophecy: The word prophecy refers to a message that God gives to someone. The message may include a vision, as in Ezekiel 1 and Daniel 8. A prophecy may reveal something about past events, current events, or future events. The prophet speaks the prophecy to the people or writes it for their use.

See how you translated this word in 1:3 or 19:10.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ ἰδοὺ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἰδού ἔρχομαι ταχύ Μακάριος ὁ τηρῶν τούς λόγους τῆς προφητείας τοῦ βιβλίου τούτου)

John assumes that his readers will understand that Jesus is speaking in this verse. You could say that explicitly if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Then Jesus said, “And behold]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τοὺς λόγους τῆς προφητείας τοῦ βιβλίου τούτου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἰδού ἔρχομαι ταχύ Μακάριος ὁ τηρῶν τούς λόγους τῆς προφητείας τοῦ βιβλίου τούτου)

Jesus is using the term words to mean what John has written in this book, using words, to describe the prophecies that God gave to him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [what you have said in this book about the prophecies God gave you]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:7 Blessed: The sixth blessing of Revelation (see 1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; 22:14) is for those who obey. Obedience is key to God’s blessing.
