OET (OET-RV)I, Yohan, am the one who saw and heard all those things, and when I heard and saw them, I knelt down to worship at the feet of the messenger who showed them to me.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Other examples of headings are:

Ending messages/announcements to endorse/approve the book

Final words to encourage the readers

Jesus, the angel, the Holy Spirit, and John conclude the book

22:8a

And I am John, who heard and saw these things.

22:8b

And when I had heard and seen them,

22:8a–b

I am John, who heard and saw these things: John referred to himself by name here in order to make it clear that he spoke for himself. Other ways to translate this clause are:

I, John, have heard and seen all these things (GNT)

I am John, I myself heard and saw those things

I am John: The pronoun I is emphasized in the Greek.

these things: This phrase refers to all that John had just seen about the new Jerusalem. However, it can also refer to all the visions that he saw in this book.

22:8c

I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel

I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel: Here the phrase fell down refers to kneeling and putting the face to the ground with arms outstretched toward someone. This position showed complete humility before that person and honored him. The word fell implies a quick and complete action. It does not refer to accidentally falling. Other ways to translate this clause are:

I prostrated myself before him

I threw myself down to worship at the feet of the angel (NET)

I knelt at the feet of the angel who had shown them to me, to worship him (NJB)

See how you translated a similar clause (“I fell at his feet to worship him”) in 19:10.

worship: This word refers to honoring someone or something as sacred/divine. Other ways to translate this word are:

venerate

revere

See how you translated this word in 13:4 or 19:10.

In some languages it is helpful to make it clear that John was about to worship the angel. For example:

and I was about to worship him (GNT)

22:8d

who had shown me these things.

who had shown me these things: This clause tells the reader more about the angel. In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that there were other angels in front of John and only this one had shown the visions to John. If that is true in your language, translate this clause so that it tells more about the angel. One way to do that is to start a new sentence here. For example:

He had showed them to me.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἔπεσα

˱I˲_fell

This expression means that John lay down facing the ground. See how you translated the similar expression in [7:11](../07/11.md). Alternate translation: [I bowed down]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:6-21 This epilogue to Revelation contains utterances by an angel (22:6, 8-11) and Christ (22:7, 12-19) followed by a concluding plea for Christ’s return (22:20) and a closing benediction (22:21). The epilogue has a number of direct verbal connections with the introduction to the book (1:1-11), and it sums up important themes such as encouraging faithful perseverance, warning evildoers, affirming the authenticity of the prophetic message, and restating the nearness of Christ’s return.
