Section 21:9–22:5: An angel showed the new Jerusalem to John

In this section, an angel showed the new Jerusalem to John. The angel again used a metaphor of a bride to describe new Jerusalem. The city was large and beautiful. God lived there with his people. His glory lighted the city. John described the city, the river that flowed through the city, and the tree that gave life. There were no bad things in the city at all.

They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.

They will see His face: No human has seen God’s face (Exodus 33:20, 1 Timothy 6:16). But God will make his people (“servants,” 22:3c) holy, so that they can come to him and see his face. This clause implies that they can speak personally with God. For example:

they will see him face to face (NJB)

His: This pronoun probably refers to God here.

His name will be on their foreheads: This clause indicates that the people belong to God and have a relationship with him.

In some languages people will think the name on their foreheads has another purpose. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

John is using one part of God, his face, to represent all of God as his servants see him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your culture or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [him]

22:4 The human fears of death and of seeing God (see Gen 16:13; 32:30; Judg 6:22; Isa 6:5) will be removed. God’s people will bear his name and will see his face with joy (see Matt 5:8; 2 Cor 3:18; 1 Jn 3:2-3).
