OET (OET-LV)And he_said to_me:
These the messages are faithful and true, and the master, the god of_the spirits of_the prophets, sent_out the messenger of_him, to_show to_the slaves of_him which things it_is_fitting to_become in quickness.

OET (OET-RV)Then he said to me, “These messages are faithful and true, and Yahweh, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his messenger out to show his slaves what’s planned to happen soon.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Other examples of headings are:

Ending messages/announcements to endorse/approve the book

Final words to encourage the readers

Jesus, the angel, the Holy Spirit, and John conclude the book

22:6a

Then the angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true.

Then the angel: This is the same angel as in 21:9a and 22:1a.

These words: This phrase refers to everything revealed to John. For example:

Everything you have heard (NLT)

faithful: This word refers to something that someone can depend on. What God said will certainly happen. Other ways to translate this word are:

reliable (NET)

can be trusted (GNT)

See how you translated this word in 21:5.

22:6b

The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel

The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets: There is a textual issue in 22:6b: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the text the spirits of the prophets (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) A few later Greek manuscripts have the text the holy prophets (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. The phrase the God of the spirits of the prophets describes the phrase The Lord. For example:

the Lord God who inspires the prophets (NJB)

God the Lord speaks to the spirits of his prophets, and

the God of the spirits of the prophets: There are two ways to interpret the Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the God of:

  1. It indicates that God has a relationship with the spirits of the prophets. He gives messages to the prophets. For example:

God, who inspires his prophets (NLT) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NJB, NASB, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, REB, NCV, ESV)

  2. It indicates that God gives the Holy Spirit to the prophets. For example:

God, who gives his Spirit to the prophets (GNT) (GNT)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the Greek word for spirits is plural, so it probably refers to the spirits of the prophets.Aune (page 1182) supports interpretation (1), noting the plural “spirits.” Beale (page 1125) says, “it would seem strange to refer to the Holy Spirit in the plural here.” Other ways to translate this phrase according to interpretation (1) are:

the God who speaks to the spirits of the prophets

the God who is connected to the spirits of the prophets

prophets: The prophets are people to whom God gives a message. The message (often called a “prophecy”) may include a vision, as in Ezekiel 1 and Daniel 8. The message, called a prophecy, may reveal something about past events, current events, or future events. The prophet speaks God’s message to the people or writes it down for their use. See how you translated this word in 10:7 or 18:20.

His angel: This phrase may refer to the angel of 1:1 or it may refer to the angel of 4:1. You should translate this phrase without describing to which angel this phrase refers.

22:6c

to show His servants what must soon take place.”

His servants: The Greek word that the BSB translates as servants can also be translated as “slaves.” Here the phrase refers to believers serving God. The difference between “slaves” and “servants” is not important here. See how you translated the word servants in 22:3.

what must soon take place: This phrase refers to all the events that are revealed in this book. For example:

what must happen very soon (GNT)

See how you translated a similar phrase in 1:1 (“what must soon come to pass”).

must: Here the word must indicates that the events are required to happen. God has decided that these events will happen, and he will not change his mind. Other ways to translate this word are:

will necessarily

has been determined to

take place: The words take place mean “happen” (as in the GNT).

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

εἶπέν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶπεν μοί Οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι πιστοί καί ἀληθινοί καί ὁ Κύριος ὁ Θεός τῶν πνευμάτων τῶν προφητῶν ἀπέστειλεν τόν ἄγγελον αὐτοῦ δεῖξαι τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ ἅ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἐν τάχει)

The pronoun he refers to the same angel as in verse 1. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [the angel said]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶπεν μοί Οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι πιστοί καί ἀληθινοί καί ὁ Κύριος ὁ Θεός τῶν πνευμάτων τῶν προφητῶν ἀπέστειλεν τόν ἄγγελον αὐτοῦ δεῖξαι τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ ἅ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἐν τάχει)

The angel is using the term words to mean what he has been telling John by using words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [What I have been telling you is]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶπεν μοί Οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι πιστοί καί ἀληθινοί καί ὁ Κύριος ὁ Θεός τῶν πνευμάτων τῶν προφητῶν ἀπέστειλεν τόν ἄγγελον αὐτοῦ δεῖξαι τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ ἅ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἐν τάχει)

The terms trustworthy and true mean similar things. The angel is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [entirely trustworthy]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:6 Everything that John records in Revelation is trustworthy and true because God, who has all authority (cp. Matt 28:18), has sent the messenger. But it does not mean these visions are easy to understand.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
