Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: The warning is told in 22:18b–19c. The BSB indicates that the warning is told after this clause by using a colon (:) at the end of the clause. Other ways to translate the clause are:

I: Here, this pronoun probably refers to John.The other possibility is Jesus, but then it would be more natural to introduce him here rather than at 22:20. Beale (page 1154) at verse 20 says, “Verses 16 and 18 have said that the angel and John have given ‘testimony’ respectively by revealing and writing down the Apocalypse. The Spirit should also be viewed as a third witness (cf. possibly 19:10, as well as the concluding verse of each of the seven letters in chapters 2–3). Now Jesus is identified as a fourth ‘witness.’” For example:

testify: The word testify refers to saying something that is truthful and accurate. Here the word indicates that people should accept the warnings spoken in 22:18b–19c. For example:

prophecy: The word prophecy refers to a message that God gives to someone. The message may include a vision, as in Ezekiel 1 and Daniel 8. This word refers to 2:1–22:16 here. See how you translated this word in 22:7.

If anyone adds to them: This clause refers to changing the meaning of anything that John had written in this book either by:

  1. adding words that he had not written,

  2. adding meanings that he did not intend.

John wanted his readers to teach and copy his visions and prophecies exactly as he had written them.

22:18c

God will add to him the plagues described in this book.

God will add to him the plagues described in this book: The phrase add to him the plagues indicates what God will do to anyone who adds to the book of Revelation. He will cause the plagues described in this book to happen to that person.

The word add poetically connects this clause with 22:18b. If possible, use the word add here as well. For example:

God will add the plagues described in this book to his woes/troubles.

the plagues described in this book: The Greek words are literally “the plagues having been written in this book.” This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active or intransitive clause. For example:

plagues: This word refers to disasters that harm a lot of people. It can refer to diseases that kill many people. It can refer to locusts that damage many crops.

22:6-21 This epilogue to Revelation contains utterances by an angel (22:6, 8-11) and Christ (22:7, 12-19) followed by a concluding plea for Christ’s return (22:20) and a closing benediction (22:21). The epilogue has a number of direct verbal connections with the introduction to the book (1:1-11), and it sums up important themes such as encouraging faithful perseverance, warning evildoers, affirming the authenticity of the prophetic message, and restating the nearness of Christ’s return.
