SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Other examples of headings are:

Ending messages/announcements to endorse/approve the book

Final words to encourage the readers

Jesus, the angel, the Holy Spirit, and John conclude the book

22:20a

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”

He who testifies to these things: The word testifies refers to saying something that is truthful and accurate. Jesus agreed that the prophecies and visions in this book are truthful and accurate. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

He, who is witness to all this (JBP)

Jesus, the One who says these things are true (NCV)

these things: This phrase refers to the whole book of Revelation. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

all this (GNT)

those things

those prophecies

I am coming soon: This clause refers to Jesus returning to his people on earth. The Greek word that the BSB translates as soon can also refer to “without delay” or “quickly.” See how you translated this clause in 22:12.

22:20b

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!: There is a textual issue in 22:20b: Early Greek manuscripts have the word come (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the words yes come (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. The direct address to Jesus occurs after what is said to him. In some languages it is more natural to have the direct address first. For example:

Lord Jesus, amen, come!

Amen: The word Amen is a Hebrew word that means “even so” or “it is true.” It is used to agree with what was said. The Greek borrowed the Hebrew word. English borrowed this word as well. See how you translated this word in 1:6 or 19:4.

Lord: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord means “the one who has authority over (something),” or “owner.” God has authority over everyone and everything. See how you translated this word in 22:5.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὁ μαρτυρῶν ταῦτα

the_‹one› testifying these_‹things›

John assumes that his readers will understand that by the one testifying he means Jesus. You could say that explicitly if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Jesus, the one who testifies these things,]

Note 2 topic: translate-transliterate

ἀμήν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Λέγει ὁ μαρτυρῶν ταῦτα Ναί ἔρχομαι ταχύ Ἀμήν Ἔρχου Κύριε Ἰησοῦ)

See how you translated the term Amen in [1:6](../01/06.md).
