TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:1-14 The narrative of Israel as a kingdom begins with the death of Saul, who failed to fulfill God’s purposes for him as king and for Israel as a nation. Saul’s death prepares the way for David, whom the Chronicler regarded as the first true king of Israel.

(Occurrence 0) When every man of Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_saw all/each/any/every (a)_man Yisrael which/who in/on/at/with,valley that/for/because/then/when fled and=because/when dead Shāʼūl and,sons,his and,abandoned cities,their and,fled and=they_came Fəlishəttiy and=they_lived in/on/at/with,them )

This is probably a generalization. Alternate translation: “When the men of Israel”

(Occurrence 0) they had fled

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_saw all/each/any/every (a)_man Yisrael which/who in/on/at/with,valley that/for/because/then/when fled and=because/when dead Shāʼūl and,sons,his and,abandoned cities,their and,fled and=they_came Fəlishəttiy and=they_lived in/on/at/with,them )

Alternate translation: “the Israelite soldiers had fled”

(Occurrence 0) the Philistines came and lived in them

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_saw all/each/any/every (a)_man Yisrael which/who in/on/at/with,valley that/for/because/then/when fled and=because/when dead Shāʼūl and,sons,his and,abandoned cities,their and,fled and=they_came Fəlishəttiy and=they_lived in/on/at/with,them )

“the Philistines came and lived in the cities from which the Israelites had fled.” This probably happened after the events in verses 8–12.
