Veneruntque peccata gentilium, et cuncta Judæis incredulis studia virtutum perversa habitatione corruperunt. Venerunt immundi spiritus, et corda quæ fidei constantia deseruit, occupaverunt. TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:1-14 The narrative of Israel as a kingdom begins with the death of Saul, who failed to fulfill God’s purposes for him as king and for Israel as a nation. Saul’s death prepares the way for David, whom the Chronicler regarded as the first true king of Israel.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) fell on his sword

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_saw lifting/taking armor,his that/for/because/then/when dead Shāʼūl and,fell also/yet he/it on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the=drought//sword/knife and=he/it_died )

He probably stuck the handle into the ground and leaned on the point so the sword would go through his body as he fell down. The action is a metonym for the result, death. See how you translated this in 1 Chronicles 10:4. Alternate translation: “killed himself with his sword”
