SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–27: Paul did not use his rights as an apostle

In this section Paul responded to a claim by some of the Corinthians that he was not an apostle. First, he defended his calling and work as an apostle. Then he used himself as an example of someone who did not use his rights.

In chapter 8 and chapter 10 Paul talked about food offered to idols. In this chapter Paul said that he was an example of somebody who had the right to do anything. He was thinking about the right to eat any kind of food. Out of love for others he refrained from doing things that he had a right to do. Instead, he tried to act in a way that would lead others to Christ.

Other possible section headings include:

Paul’s rights as an apostle

Paul's example of not using his rights

Paragraph 9:1–2

In this paragraph Paul argued that he truly was an apostle and gave proof of his apostleship.

9:2a

Even if I am not an apostle to others,

Even if I am not an apostle to others: In this clause Paul said that some people did not accept him as an apostle. He did not say that he was not an apostle. Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

Others may think that I am not an apostle (CEV)

Even if others do not accept me as an apostle (GNT)

9:2b

surely I am to you.

surely I am to you: The phrase surely I am to you means “surely I am an apostle to you.” It indicates that the Corinthians should acknowledge that Paul was a true apostle. Translate this in a way that fits with your translation of the previous verse part. For example:

Even if others do not accept me as an apostle, surely you do! (GNT)

9:2c

For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces Paul’s grounds for saying that he was an apostle to the Corinthians.

you are the seal of my apostleship: The word seal refers to a mark pressed into wax or clay. For example, a person put a seal onto a letter as proof that it was genuine. The seal proved that the letter came from the person it claimed to be from. Paul used this word as a metaphor. He was saying that the believers in Corinth were proof that he was a true apostle. Here are some ways to translate this metaphor:

my apostleship: The word apostleship refers to the official position or work of an apostle. See apostle in 9:1.

in the Lord: There are several ways to understand how this phrase relates to the rest of the sentence:

  1. It relates to the word “you.” It indicates that the Corinthians were in the Lord, or united to the Lord.9:2 See Thiselton, Fee, Robertson and Plummer, Ellington and Hatton, or Deibler. For example:

Because of your life in union with the Lord you yourselves are proof of the fact that I am an apostle (GNT) (GNT, GW)

  2. It relates to the word “apostleship.” It indicates that Paul was an apostle in the Lord or for the Lord. For example:

You yourselves are the proof of my work as the Lord’s apostle (NLT) (NLT, NCV)

  3. It relates to the whole sentence in general. For example:

For in the Lord you are the very seal of my apostleship (REB) (REB, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). That is supported by several English versions and several commentators. However, the exact emphasis of Paul’s thought is not certain.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical

εἰ ἄλλοις οὐκ εἰμὶ ἀπόστολος, ἀλλά γε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ ἄλλοις οὐκ εἰμί ἀπόστολος ἀλλά γέ ὑμῖν εἰμί ἡ γάρ σφραγίς μού τῆς ἀποστολῆς ὑμεῖς ἐστέ ἐν Κυρίῳ)

Here Paul uses if to introduce a true possibility. He means that others might think that he is not an apostle, or they might think that he is an apostle. He then specifies the result for if the others think that he is not an apostle. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this form by stating the if statement by introducing the statement with “perhaps.” Alternate translation: [Perhaps I am not an apostle to others, but at least]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἡ & σφραγίς μου τῆς ἀποστολῆς, ὑμεῖς ἐστε

the & seal (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ ἄλλοις οὐκ εἰμί ἀπόστολος ἀλλά γέ ὑμῖν εἰμί ἡ γάρ σφραγίς μού τῆς ἀποστολῆς ὑμεῖς ἐστέ ἐν Κυρίῳ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind proof, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “prove” or “show.” Alternate translation: [you prove my apostleship] or [you show that I am an apostle]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

ἡ & σφραγίς μου τῆς ἀποστολῆς

the & seal (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ ἄλλοις οὐκ εἰμί ἀπόστολος ἀλλά γέ ὑμῖν εἰμί ἡ γάρ σφραγίς μού τῆς ἀποστολῆς ὑμεῖς ἐστέ ἐν Κυρίῳ)

Here Paul uses the possessive form to speak about a proof that shows his apostleship. If your language does not use this form to express that meaning, you can express the idea by using a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: [what proves my apostleship]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μου τῆς ἀποστολῆς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ ἄλλοις οὐκ εἰμί ἀπόστολος ἀλλά γέ ὑμῖν εἰμί ἡ γάρ σφραγίς μού τῆς ἀποστολῆς ὑμεῖς ἐστέ ἐν Κυρίῳ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind apostleship, you can express the idea by using a verbal phrase such as “I am an apostle.” Alternate translation: [that I am an apostle]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν Κυρίῳ

in ˓the˒_Lord

Here Paul uses the spatial metaphor in the Lord to describe the union of believers with Christ. In this case, being in the Lord, or united to the Lord, describes the proof that the Corinthians provide as something that happens in union with the Lord. Alternate translation: [in union with the Lord] or [as you are united to the Lord]
