OET (OET-LV)And_see/lo/see it_will_be_left in_it an_escaped_remnant those_who_are_brought_out sons and_daughters there_they are_about_to_come_out to_you(pl) and_you(pl)_will_see DOM conduct_of_their and_DOM practices_of_their and_you(pl)_will_be_comforted on the_calamity which I_have_brought on Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) DOM all_of that I_have_brought on_it.

OET (OET-RV)But listen! Despite that, a remnant will be left in the city—survivors who’ll go out with sons and daughters. Yes, they’ll go out to you, and you’ll see their behaviour and actions and understand why they deserved the punishment that I sent to Yerushalem, and about everything else that I’ve sent against the country.

uW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) Behold

(Some words not found in UHB: and=see/lo/see! left in,it survivors [those,who_are]_brought_out sons and=daughters there,they come_out to,you(pl) and,you(pl)_will_see DOM conduct_of,their and=DOM practices_of,their and,you(pl)_will_be_comforted on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,calamity which/who brought on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim DOM all/each/any/every which/who brought on,it )

The word “behold” here alerts us to pay attention to the information that follows.

(Occurrence 0) left in her

(Some words not found in UHB: and=see/lo/see! left in,it survivors [those,who_are]_brought_out sons and=daughters there,they come_out to,you(pl) and,you(pl)_will_see DOM conduct_of,their and=DOM practices_of,their and,you(pl)_will_be_comforted on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,calamity which/who brought on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim DOM all/each/any/every which/who brought on,it )

The word “her” refers to Jerusalem.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) be comforted concerning the punishment

(Some words not found in UHB: and=see/lo/see! left in,it survivors [those,who_are]_brought_out sons and=daughters there,they come_out to,you(pl) and,you(pl)_will_see DOM conduct_of,their and=DOM practices_of,their and,you(pl)_will_be_comforted on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,calamity which/who brought on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim DOM all/each/any/every which/who brought on,it )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “they will comfort you concerning the punishment”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:22-23 Some survivors would emerge from the devastating judgment (14:21) and join those already in exile. They would not survive because of their righteousness or that of their relatives, but simply as an object lesson for those in exile. As the exiles saw the depravity of this remnant, they would feel better about what God had done to Jerusalem. The exiles would know that God had not acted without cause but had acted with justice in his judgment upon Jerusalem.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
