OET (OET-RV)Meanwhile Elisha had been sick and heading for his last days, so Israel’s king Yehoash had been to see him, and cried as he stood in front of him and said, “My father, my father, the Israel’s chariot and its horsemen!”[fn]

13:14 This was the same as what Elisha had said when Eliyyah had been taken to heaven. See 2:12.

uW Translation Notes:

Elisha was not the king’s literal father. King Joash used this term as a sign of respect.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) the chariots of Israel and the horsemen are taking you away

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Elisha became_sick DOM illness,him which/who die in/on/over=him/it and=he/it_descended to=him/it Yəhōʼāsh/(Jehoash) king Yisrael and,wept on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=faces/face and,said father,my father,my chariots Yisrael and,horsemen,its )

This is a reference to Elijah going to heaven in 2 Kings 2:11 and 2 Kings 2:12. Joash uses this phrase to say that Elisha was going to die. Alternate translation: “the chariots of Israel and the horsemen are taking you to heaven”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) the horsemen

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Elisha became_sick DOM illness,him which/who die in/on/over=him/it and=he/it_descended to=him/it Yəhōʼāsh/(Jehoash) king Yisrael and,wept on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=faces/face and,said father,my father,my chariots Yisrael and,horsemen,its )

This refers to the men who drove the chariots. This can be made explicit. Alternate translation: “the drivers of the chariots”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:14 Jehoash wept over Elisha, showing that a faint glow of spiritual consciousness still existed in him.
• the chariots and charioteers of Israel: Jehoash’s tribute to Elisha is reminiscent of Elisha’s words at Elijah’s departure (2:12).
