OET (OET-LV) And_he/it_was they were_burying a_man and_BEHOLD/LO/SEE they_saw DOM (the)_marauding_band and_they_threw DOM the_man in_the_grave_of ʼElīshāˊ and_he/it_went and_he_touched the_man (in)_the_bones_of ʼElīshāˊ and_he/it_lived and_he/it_rose_up on feet_of_his.
OET (OET-RV) and once there was a group of Israelis burying a man. When they saw the raiding party, they quickly threw the body into Elisha’s tomb, and when it touched his bones, the man came back to life and stood up.
Note 1 topic: writing-newevent
וַיְהִ֞י
and=he/it_was
The author is using the phrase And it happened to introduce a new event in the story. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new event.
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns
הֵ֣ם ׀ קֹבְרִ֣ים אִ֗ישׁ
they burying (a)_man
Here the author is using the pronoun they in a general sense, not to refer to specific people. Use an expression for this that would be natural in your language. Alternate translation: [some people were burying a man] or [a man was being buried]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְהִנֵּה֙
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was they burying (a)_man and=see/lo/see! saw DOM (the)_marauding,band and,they_threw DOM the=man in,the_grave_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_went and,he_touched the=man (in)_the,bones_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_lived and=he/it_rose_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in feet_of,his )
See how you translated the similar expression in [1:9](../01/09.md).
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ וַיִּגַּ֤ע הָאִישׁ֙ בְּעַצְמ֣וֹת אֱלִישָׁ֔ע
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was they burying (a)_man and=see/lo/see! saw DOM (the)_marauding,band and,they_threw DOM the=man in,the_grave_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_went and,he_touched the=man (in)_the,bones_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_lived and=he/it_rose_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in feet_of,his )
Since the man was dead, it is not the case that he went anywhere on his own. In this case the author is using a verb of motion to indicate a change of location. What he means is that the man’s body came into contact with the bones of Elisha. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [And the man’s body came into contact with the bones of Elisha]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
בְּעַצְמ֣וֹת אֱלִישָׁ֔ע
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was they burying (a)_man and=see/lo/see! saw DOM (the)_marauding,band and,they_threw DOM the=man in,the_grave_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_went and,he_touched the=man (in)_the,bones_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_lived and=he/it_rose_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in feet_of,his )
Since Elisha had only recently died, the author seems to be using his bones to represent all of his remains. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [Elisha’s remains]
Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns
וַיָּ֥קָם עַל־רַגְלָֽיו
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was they burying (a)_man and=see/lo/see! saw DOM (the)_marauding,band and,they_threw DOM the=man in,the_grave_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_went and,he_touched the=man (in)_the,bones_of ʼElīshāˊ and=he/it_lived and=he/it_rose_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in feet_of,his )
The pronoun he refers to the man, not to Elisha. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [that the man arose onto his feet]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
