OET (OET-LV)And_they_poured_it_out for_the_men to_eat and_he/it_was just_as_they_ate some_of_the_cooked_food and_they they_cried_out and_they_said death is_in_pot Oh_man_of the_ʼElohīm and_not they_were_able to_eat_it.

OET (OET-RV)Then they served it up for the men to eat, but when they ate it, they called out, “Man of God, there’s poison in that pot!”

uW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) they poured out the stew

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_poured_[it]_out for_[the],men to,eat and=he/it_was just,as,they_ate some,of,the_cooked_food and,they cried_out and=they_said death [is]_in,pot (a)_man the=ʼElohīm and=not could to,eat_[it] )

Alternate translation: “they poured the stew into bowls”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) there is death in the pot

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_poured_[it]_out for_[the],men to,eat and=he/it_was just,as,they_ate some,of,the_cooked_food and,they cried_out and=they_said death [is]_in,pot (a)_man the=ʼElohīm and=not could to,eat_[it] )

This means that there was something in the pot that could kill them, not that there is something dead in the pot. Alternate translation: “there is something in the pot that will kill us”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:39-41 The men immediately recognized that the young man’s wild gourds were poisonous; they did not want to be poisoned or to waste the stew during a famine, so they turned to Elisha for help. The flour was a tangible symbol of God’s miraculous provision of food.
