OET (OET-LV) And_purified_them from_all foreignness and_established duties of_the_priests and_to_the_Lēviyyiy each in/on/at/with_work_his.
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential
וְטִֽהַרְתִּ֖ים
and,purified,them
In this context, the conjunction And indicates that this event it introduces took place after the event the story has just described. If it would be helpful in your language, you could show this relationship by using a word such as then
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְטִֽהַרְתִּ֖ים מִכָּל־נֵכָ֑ר
and,purified,them from=all foreign
Them means the priests and Levites whom Nehemiah has just mentioned. He probably says purified in a figurative sense. He did not hold a ceremony of purification, since the priests and Levites themselves would have done that. Rather, he means that he made sure that none of the other priests or Levites were married to foreign women, and that in this way he ensured that the priesthood was no longer unclean, as described in 13:29. Alternate translation: “I made sure that none of the priests or Levites were married to foreign women.”
וָאַעֲמִ֧ידָה מִשְׁמָר֛וֹת לַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים וְלַלְוִיִּ֖ם
and,established, duties of_the,priests and,to_the,Levites
Generally in this book, the phrase service watch refers to the Levite singers. It means either an individual choir or a time on duty for the singers. But since Nehemiah also speaks of the priests here, in this context the phrase seems to mean more generally the time on duty for both the priests and the Levites. Alternate translation: “I made sure that the priests and Levites all came on duty in the temple when they were supposed to”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
וָאַעֲמִ֧ידָה
and,established,
Nehemiah is speaking of these temple arrangements figuratively, as in 5:13, as if they were a living thing that could stand, that is, stay in place or be established rather than go away. Alternate translation: “I made sure that”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
אִ֥ישׁ בִּמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ
(a)_man in/on/at/with,work,his
In this context, a man means each one of them Alternate translation: “and that each one fulfilled his assigned responsibilities”
13:15-31 Nehemiah instituted two additional reforms to restore proper Sabbath observance (13:15-22) and proper marriage practices (13:23-31). These two sections have similar structures: Nehemiah discovered a problem, corrected the problem, and asked God for his blessing.
