Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
פָּקַ֤ד אוֹתָם֙
appointed DOM,they
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Moses, Aaron, and the leaders counted them”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁ֔ה
in/on/at/with,direction_of Mosheh
See how you translated this phrase in [4:37](../04/37.md).
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
אִ֥ישׁ אִ֛ישׁ
(a)_man (a)_man
In this verse, the phrase man by man is a Hebrew idiom that means “each man.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. See how you translated the similar use of man in [1:4](../01/04.md). Alternative translation: “each man”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Moses implies that this service and load are related to the tent of meeting. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “in accordance with his service in the tent of meeting and in accordance with his load associated with it”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
מַשָּׂא֑וֹ
carrying_of,his/its
See how you translated the same use of load in [4:15](../04/15.md).
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
וּפְקֻדָ֕יו
and,counted_of,him
See how you translated the same use of counted ones in the previous verse.
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה
which/who commanded YHWH DOM Mosheh
Moses is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “that Yahweh had commanded Moses to count”
4:1-49 This section expands the discussion begun in 3:21-37 on the duties of the three clans of Levites. The Levites—on the march and encamped—carried and cared for the Tabernacle and were always surrounded by the other tribes so that they and their precious cargo would be safe (2:17). The sacred things associated with God were placed in the middle of the tribes, and the role of the priests and their Levitical assistants was to keep them holy by keeping them separate.
• God, in his holiness, is worthy of attention to the details of his will. His Tabernacle and its furnishings were sacred, and the tribe of Levi was responsible to maintain the distinction between holy and common, between clean and unclean. This explains why so much information is provided about the duties of the three clans of Levites.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
