OET (OET-LV) And the sixth messenger trumpeted, and I_heard one voice from the horns of_the altar the golden which before the god,

OET (OET-RV) Then the sixth messenger blew his trumpet and I heard a voice coming from the corners of the golden altar in front of God,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:6–9:21: Angels blew the first six trumpets

In this section, the blowing of each trumpet signaled a disaster. God would send these disasters upon the people of the earth. Some of the disasters were hail, fire, and poisoned water.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Seven Angels and Trumpets (NCV)

The Seven Trumpets (NRSV)

9:13a

Then the sixth angel sounded his trumpet,

the sixth: This refers to the next item after five other things. If counted, this item would be counted as number six. See how you translated this word in 6:12.

9:13b

and I heard a voice

I heard a voice: In some languages hearing a voice is not natural. For example:

I heard words

I heard someone speaking

9:13c

from the four horns of the golden altar before God

the four horns: There is a textual issue here:

  1. Some manuscripts have the four horns. For example:

the four horns (RSV) (BSB; RSV, GNT, NJB, NIV2011, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, ESV, KJV)

  2. Some manuscripts have the horns. For example:

the horns (NET) (NIV, NET, REB, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT editors decided that option (1) was more likely. The scholars reviewing the manuscripts say that it was difficult for them to decide. Beale (page 505) also includes “four” in his translation and discussion, but Aune (page 482) and Mounce (page 192) do not.

horns: Here the word horns refers to the raised corners at the top of the altar. For example:

a voice coming from the four corners of the gold altar (GNT)

altar: On earth, an altar is a platform on which people offer sacrifices or gifts to God. This altar is golden, like the small altar for burning incense in the Jewish Temple. But this altar is in heaven in John’s vision. Translate this word as you did in 6:9 or 8:3.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-ordinal

ὁ ἕκτος ἄγγελος

the sixth angel

If your language does not use ordinal numbers, you could use a cardinal number here or an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: [angel number six]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

φωνὴν μίαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ ἕκτος ἄγγελος ἐσάλπισεν καί ἤκουσα φωνήν μίαν ἐκ τῶν κεράτων τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ χρυσοῦ τοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ)

John is using one part of a person, his voice, to represent all of the person in the act of speaking. John does not say who the speaker was, but it may have been God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your culture or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [someone speaking]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

κεράτων

horns

John is referring to the horn-shaped extensions that were at each of the four corners of the top of the altar. He calls them horns by association with their shape. If it would be clearer for your readers, in your translation you could just refer to the “corners” of the altar, as UST does.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ

˱of˲_the ¬the ¬which before ¬the God

Here the word before means “in front of” or “in the presence of” another person. The Jews believed that God was especially present at his altar. Alternate translation: [that is in the presence of God]
