OET (OET-LV)And it_was_said to_them that neither they_may_injure the grass of_the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, except not/lest the people who not are_having the seal of_ the _god on their foreheads.

OET (OET-RV)However the locusts were told that they shouldn’t harm the grass or any green plants or trees, but only those people who didn’t have God’s mark on their foreheads.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:6–9:21: Angels blew the first six trumpets

In this section, the blowing of each trumpet signaled a disaster. God would send these disasters upon the people of the earth. Some of the disasters were hail, fire, and poisoned water.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Seven Angels and Trumpets (NCV)

The Seven Trumpets (NRSV)

9:4a

They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,

They were told: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God told them

the grass of the earth or any plant or tree: Grass, plants, and trees all grow on the earth. In some languages it is more natural to indicate that all these things grow on the earth. For example:

any grass, green plant, or tree on the earth (GW)

Since people usually think of grass, plants, and trees as growing on the earth, it is more natural in some languages to omit the phrase of the earth. For example:

the grass or plants or trees (NLT)

9:4b

but only those who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

but only those who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads: This clause indicates that God told the locusts to harm the people named here. In some languages it is more natural to repeat some of the words from 9:4a here. For example:

they could harm only the people who did not have the mark of God’s seal on their foreheads (GNT)

those who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads: Earlier, in 7:3–4, angels put God’s seal or mark on 144,000 people. The phrase here refers to the people without that seal or mark.

seal: This word refers to a mark put on the people. The mark is placed with the device called a “seal” (7:2b). What the mark looked like is not described. Other ways to translate this word are:

mark of ownership

owner’s symbol

See how you translated this word in 7:3.

General Comment on 9:4a–b

In some languages it is more natural to translate these instructions as a direct quote. For example:

They were told, “Do not harm the grass on the earth or any plant or tree. You may harm only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐρρέθη αὐταῖς

˱it˲_˓was˒_said ˱to˲_them

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God commanded them]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

ἐρρέθη αὐταῖς, ἵνα μὴ ἀδικήσουσιν τὸν χόρτον τῆς γῆς, οὐδὲ πᾶν χλωρὸν, οὐδὲ πᾶν δένδρον, εἰ μὴ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους οἵτινες οὐκ ἔχουσι τὴν σφραγῖδα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπὶ τῶν μετώπων

˱it˲_˓was˒_said ˱to˲_them that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐρρέθη αὐταῖς ἵνα μή ἀδικήσωσιν τόν χόρτον τῆς γῆς οὐδέ παν χλωρόν οὐδέ παν δένδρον εἰ μή τούς ἀνθρώπους οἵτινες οὐκ ἔχουσι τήν σφραγῖδα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπί τῶν μετώπων)

Having a direct quotation here may be more natural in your language. Alternate translation: [And they were told, “Do not harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.”]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

τοὺς ἀνθρώπους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐρρέθη αὐταῖς ἵνα μή ἀδικήσωσιν τόν χόρτον τῆς γῆς οὐδέ παν χλωρόν οὐδέ παν δένδρον εἰ μή τούς ἀνθρώπους οἵτινες οὐκ ἔχουσι τήν σφραγῖδα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπί τῶν μετώπων)

As the introduction to this chapter discusses, here and in several other places in this chapter John uses the masculine word men in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use a term in your language that is clearly inclusive of both men and women. Alternate translation: [the people]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
