ULTAnd Herod, having searched for him and not having found him, having questioned the guards, ordered them to be put to death. And having gone down from Judea to Caesarea, he was staying there.

USTThen Herod heard about it. So he commanded soldiers to search for Peter, but they did not find him. Then Herod questioned the soldiers who had been guarding Peter. But the soldiers had no good explanation for what had happened. So Herod commanded them to be executed, which was how the Romans punished guards whose prisoners escaped. Afterwards, Herod went from the province of Judea to the city of Caesarea, where he stayed for some time.

12:19 The Greek actually says, “that they be led away.” However, most commentators understand this to mean “led away to their deaths,” since the punishment for allowing prisoners to escape was execution.

12:6-19 God, through an angel, led Peter out, reunited him with his praying friends, and sent him out to carry on the work of spreading the Good News. The message advanced despite determined opposition.
