SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:9–17: A great multitude praised God and the Lamb

In this section, John saw a new part of this vision. He saw believers rejoicing, praising, and worshiping in heaven. One of the elders around the throne (4:4) explained the vision to John.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The vision of a huge crowd of believers and its explanation

The Great Multitude in White Robes (NIV)

God’s People Around His Throne in Heaven (GW)

7:15a–17c

These verses read like poetry.Osbourne speaks of its rhythm, Kistemaker likens it to a hymn, and Smalley also calls it poetic, with three parts in each verse. The UBS4 formats it as poetry. Consider whether you want to format these verses as poetry, as the BSB and some other English versions do.

7:15a

For this reason, they are before the throne of God

they are before the throne of God: This clause indicates that these people are in the presence of God. For example:

they stand before God’s throne (GNT)

7:15b

and serve Him day and night in His temple;

serve Him: Here the word serve refers to doing religious duties such as priests do. Other ways to translate this word are:

do His will

do everything that He commands them to do

day and night: This phrase refers to doing something all the time. See how you translated this phrase in 4:8.

His temple: The word temple refers to a building where God, or another deity, is believed to be present in a special way. People worship there. See how you translated this word in 3:12.

7:15c

and the One seated on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them.

the One seated on the throne: This phrase refers to God. This implied meaning may already be clear in your translation. See how you translated this phrase at 5:1.

will spread His tabernacle over them: This clause indicates figuratively that God will dwell with these believers, protect them, and care for them. Other ways to translate this clause are:

will shelter them with his presence (RSV)

will be their shelter (JBP)

will be present with them (NCV)

ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτὸς

˱by˲_day (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο εἰσίν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θρόνου τοῦ Θεοῦ καί λατρεύουσιν αὐτῷ ἡμέρας καί νυκτός ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτοῦ καί ὁ καθήμενος ἐπί τοῦ θρόνου σκηνώσει ἐπʼ αὐτούς)

The elder is using the two main components of time, day and night, to mean all the time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [constantly]
