OET (OET-RV)There’s definitely been no women near us for three days,” David told the priest. “That’s how I always do missions. The men[fn] have been pure, even though it was a common journey, and today even more so.”

21:5 The Hebrew says ‘the men’s vessels’ (or ‘containers’). It’s not culturally clear if that referred to their ‘bodies’ (as this translation implies) or to something they carried.

BrTrAnd the priest answered David, and said, There are no common loaves under my hand, for I have none but holy loaves: if the young men have been kept at least from women, then they shall eat them.

ULTAnd David answered the priest and said to him, “Surely a woman has been kept away with respect to us as yesterday and three days ago, as whenever I have gone out. And the vessels of the men have been holy, even though it was a common journey. And how much more today will it be holy with the vessels!”

USTDavid replied, “They have not been near women for many days. I do not allow my men to defile themselves by sleeping with women while they are preparing to fight in battles. They must continue to keep themselves acceptable to God when they are on ordinary trips, and today they have certainly kept themselves acceptable to God because now we are doing something very special.”

BSB  § David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”

OEBDavid answered the priest, ‘Women have been kept from us, as always when I set out on an expedition. The weapons of the young men were consecrated even on an ordinary journey; how much more then today will their weapons be holy!’

WEBBEDavid answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us as usual these three days. When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was only a common journey. How much more then today shall their vessels be holy?”

LSVAnd David answers the priest and says to him, “Surely, if women have been restrained from us as before in my going out, then the vessels of the young men are holy, and it [is] a common way; and also, surely it is sanctified today in the vessel.”

FBV“We have not slept with any women,” David answered. “In fact that's the rule when I lead the troops on mission. They keep themselves pure even during ordinary missions, and all the more so right now.”

T4TDavid replied, “They have not been near women for many days. I do not allow my men to defile themselves by sleeping with women while they are preparing to fight in battles. They must continue to keep themselves acceptable to God when they are on ordinary trips, and today they have kept themselves acceptable to God because now we are doing something very special/important.”

LEBDavid answered the priest and said to him, “Indeed, women were held back from us as it has been when I’ve gone out before.[fn] And the things[fn] of the young men are holy when[fn] it is an ordinary journey. How much more[fn] today[fn] will the things[fn] be holy?”
