18.1 Et factum est, etc., et dilexit, etc. RAB. in lib. Reg. Jonathas dilexit David: vir videlicet bellicosus juvenem aptum pugnis. 19.. Sic enim Jonathas dedit David vestimenta sua a tunica usque ad balteum, cum credentes omnia quæ habuerant, in Christi servitium contulerunt.

18.1 And done it_is, etc., and he_loved, etc. RAB. in lib. Reg. Yonathas he_loved David: man videlicet bellicosus yuvenem aptum pugnis. Yonathas significat them who about Yudæis in Christum crediderunt et, percepta gratia Spiritus sancti, for Christo relictis to_all ipsum followed are. Unde Petrus: Behold we reliquimus everything, and followed sumus te Matth. 19.. So because Yonathas he_gave David clothes his_own from tunica until to balteum, when/with credentes everything which habuerant, in of_Christ servitium conthey_took.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:1 David and Jonathan had much in common: both were young and capable, were military heroes, had a robust faith in God, and had a claim to the throne of Israel. It is a testimony to Jonathan’s true character that he recognized and supported God’s choice of David to be the next king of Israel (see 18:3-4; 20:12-17).
• Jonathan loved David: See 20:17; 2 Sam 1:26. Others in this chapter are also said to love David: all Israel and Judah (1 Sam 18:16), Saul’s daughter Michal (18:20), and Saul’s servants (18:22). Some modern interpreters see a homosexual relationship between David and Jonathan, but the text implies nothing other than a deep and loyal friendship.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was when,finished,he to,speaking to/towards Shāʼūl and,soul Yōnātān/(Jonathan) knit in/on/at/with,soul Dāvid and,loved Yōnātān/(Jonathan) as,soul,his_own )

Very close friendship is spoken of as if it were binding together the souls of two people. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Jonathan felt a strong affection towards David” or “Jonathan committed himself to David” (See also: figs-activepassive)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) Jonathan loved him as his own soul

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was when,finished,he to,speaking to/towards Shāʼūl and,soul Yōnātān/(Jonathan) knit in/on/at/with,soul Dāvid and,loved Yōnātān/(Jonathan) as,soul,his_own )

Here “loved” refers to the love between friends, not romantic love. The word “soul” represents the person or the person’s life. Alternate translation: “Jonathan loved David as much as he loved himself” or “Jonathan loved David as he loved his own life”
