14:1 armor bearer: See study note on 16:21.
• Jonathan did not tell his father because he knew that Saul would not grant permission for the dangerous plan. But he also knew that Saul wanted no one—not even his own son—to upstage him.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיְהִ֣י

and=he/it_was

The author is using this phrase to introduce a new event in the story. See how you translated it in [1:12](../01/12.md).

Note 2 topic: translate-unknown

הַנַּ֨עַר֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֔יו

the,young_man lifting/taking armor_of,his

This expression refers to a soldier who, in ancient warfare, carried the weapons and armor of a superior soldier and who fought alongside that soldier. If your readers would not be familiar with this role, in your translation you could use the name of a similar role that your readers would recognize, or you could use a general expression. Alternate translation: [the young man who was his armor-bearer]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְנַעְבְּרָה֙ אֶל־מַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַלָּ֑ז

and,go_over to/towards garrison_of Pelishtim which/who on,side_of the_other

Based on the author’s statements in [13:16](../13/16.md) that the Israelites were occupying a position in Geba and in [13:23](../13/23.md) that the Philistines had sent a detachment to guard the pass of Michmash, he expects readers to understand that Jonathan is suggesting that he and his armor-bearer cross the valley from Geba to the top of the cliff where the Philistine garrison was. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and let us cross over from here in Geba to attack the Philistine detachment that is on top of the cliff opposite us]
