ULTSaul was a son of a year when he reigned. And he reigned over Israel two years.[fn]

Saul was a son of a year appears to be missing a number in the Hebrew text. Some ancient versions are missing the verse entirely, while others have 30 years.

USTSaul was thirty years old when he began to reign. He ruled for forty years.

BSB  § Saul was thirty years old[fn] when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.[fn]

13:1 A few late LXX manuscripts; MT Saul was a son of a year

13:1 Or over Israel forty years (see Acts 13:21); MT over Israel two years

OEBSaul was … years old when he began to reign, and he reigned … and two years over Israel.[fn]

13:1 The numbers are missing from the text.

WEBBESaul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.[fn]

13:1 The traditional Hebrew text omits “thirty” and “forty-”. The blanks are filled in here from a few manuscripts of the Septuagint.

LSVSaul [is] a son of [[thirty]] years in his reigning, and he has reigned over Israel [forty]-two years,

FBVSaul was thirty when he became king, and he reigned over Israel for forty-two years.

T4TSaul was no longer a young man when he became the king. He ruled Israel for 42 years.

LEBSaul was thirty[fn] years old[fn] at the beginning of his reign, and he reigned forty-two years[fn] over Israel.

13:1 A few LXX manuscripts have “thirty,” but the number of years is missing from the Masoretic Hebrew text

13:1 Literally “a son of years”

13:1 The Masoretic Hebrew text reads “two years” here, but this number seems far too small; either it is not correct or part of the number is missing (the present translation supplies “forty”); other English versions differ as to Saul’s age at coronation and the total years of his reign

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:1 For the kings of Israel and Judah, Scripture normally records the age of ascension and the length of reign (e.g., 2 Sam 5:4-5; 1 Kgs 14:21).
• thirty years old: The number represents a plausible age for Saul’s ascension. The Hebrew text and most Greek manuscripts omit the number , making it difficult to know the original wording.
• reigned for forty-two years: See NLT textual note. Most scholars agree that something has fallen out of the original manuscript, most likely due to a copyist’s error. The majority of English translations have forty-two based on the approximate number in Acts 13:21.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Samuel has renewed Saul’s kingdom at Gilgal and Samuel has reminded the people to follow the Lord.

(Occurrence 0) Saul was thirty years old … over Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of year Shāʼūl in/on/at/with,reign,he and,two years reigned on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yisrael )

The text of this verse in ancient copies seems to have been mutilated, so modern versions have many different translations. They are all attempts to represent the most probable meaning of the original text.
