TSNTyndale Study Notes:

21:4 Only priests were permitted to partake of holy bread (see Exod 25:22-30; Lev 24:5-9), and only within the sacred precincts.
• slept with any women: The consecrated bread was to be eaten only by the ritually pure, so the priest verified that David’s men were free from ritual impurity caused by sexual activity (see Lev 15:16-18). Typically, such bread would not be available for consumption by laity. The priest made an exception in this case probably because he sensed the men’s physical needs and he believed they were on a royal mission.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אֵֽין־לֶ֥חֶם חֹ֖ל אֶל־תַּ֣חַת יָדִ֑י

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now what? have on hand_of,you five food/grain/bread give, in/on/at/with,hand_of,me or the, found )

See how you translated the similar expression in [21:3](../21/03.md). Alternate translation: [I have no common bread on hand] or [I have no common bread available]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

אִם־נִשְׁמְר֥וּ הַנְּעָרִ֖ים אַ֥ךְ מֵאִשָּֽׁה

(Some words not found in UHB: and=now what? have on hand_of,you five food/grain/bread give, in/on/at/with,hand_of,me or the, found )

Ahimelech is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [The young men may have it if only they have kept themselves from women]
