BrTr So Abimelech the priest gave him the shewbread; for there were no loaves there, but only the presence loaves which had been removed from the presence of the Lord, in order that hot bread should be set on, on the day on which he took them.
ULT Now a man from the servants of Saul was there on that day, he was detained before the face of Yahweh. And his name was Doeg the Edomite, a powerful one of the herders who were for Saul.
UST It happened that Doeg, from the Edom people group, was there on that day to make himself acceptable to Yahweh, and he saw what Ahimelech did. He was one of Saul’s officials and the leader of Saul’s shepherds.

FBV One of Saul's servants happened to be there that day, trying to make himself right[fn] with the Lord. He was Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief shepherd.
21:7 “Make himself right”: literally “detained.” It appears Doeg was offering a sacrifice for some sin he had committed and that the priest Ahimelech was aware of. This seems to be one reason Doeg informed on David (22:9) and executed Saul's command to kill Ahimelech and the other priests.

21:7 having been detained before the Lord: Ahimelech sought guidance from God on others’ behalf (22:15), so it is possible that Doeg was awaiting a response to an inquiry.
