OET (OET-LV)You_all are the sons of_the prophets, and of_the covenant which the god covenanted with the fathers of_you_all, saying to Abraʼam/(ʼAⱱrāhām):
And in the seed of_you all the families of_the earth will_be_being_blessed.

OET (OET-RV)And you are the descendants of those prophets, and part of the agreement between God and your ancestors, when he told Abraham, ‘All the families in the world will be blessed by one of your descendants.’

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν προφητῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

Peter is using the word sons in the sense of “heirs,” by association with the way that children inherit from their parents. He means that the Israelites living at this time are going to receive something as a legacy from those who lived before them. Alternate translation: [You are the ones who are going to receive what the prophets promised] or [You are the ones who are going to experience what the prophets foretold]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

οἱ υἱοὶ

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

Although the term sons is masculine, Peter is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If you retain the metaphor in your translation, you could state “the sons and daughters” to indicate this.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

καὶ τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεὸς πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

The figurative sense of sons as “heirs” continues in this phrase. Alternate translation: [and who are going to receive what God promised to your fathers when he made a covenant with them]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν, λέγων πρὸς Ἀβραάμ, καὶ ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου ἐνευλογηθήσονται πᾶσαι αἱ πατριαὶ τῆς γῆς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [with your fathers when he said to Abraham that in his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

Here, fathers means “ancestors.” Alternate translation: [your ancestors]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

Although the term fathers is masculine, Peter is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If you retain the metaphor in your translation, you could state “your fathers and mothers” to indicate this.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου

in the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

The term seed means “offspring.” It is a word picture. Just as plants produce seeds that grow into many more plants, so people can have many offspring. Alternate translation: [through your descendants] or see the next note for a further possibility.

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου

in the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

As the apostle Paul notes in [Galatians 3:16](../gal/03/16.md), God used the singular form of the word seed when he said this to Abraham, and so the ultimate fulfillment of this promise came when God sent Jesus as the Savior for everyone in the world who would believe in him. That may also be what Peter has in view here, since he refers in the next verse to God’s “Servant,” meaning the Messiah. Alternate translation: [through the Messiah, who will be your descendant]

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐνευλογηθήσονται πᾶσαι αἱ πατριαὶ τῆς γῆς

˓will_be_being˒_blessed (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: [I will bless all the families of the earth]

Note 10 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

πᾶσαι αἱ πατριαὶ τῆς γῆς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὑμεῖς ἐστέ οἱ υἱοί τῶν προφητῶν καί τῆς διαθήκης ἧς διέθετο ὁ Θεός πρός τούς πατέρας ὑμῶν λέγων πρός Ἀβραάμ Καί ἐν τῷ σπέρματι σοῦ ἐνευλογηθήσονται πάσαι αἱ πατριαί τῆς γῆς)

Here, families refers to people groups or nations by association with the way that many of them consist of people who have a common ancestry. Alternate translation: [all the nations of the world]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:25 all the families on earth will be blessed: God’s blessings on the covenant people were not intended to be selfishly hoarded, but were to be shared with the world.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
