OET (OET-LV)And they_were_recognizing him that he was the one sitting at the Beautiful gate of_the temple for the alms, and they_were_filled with_amazement and amazement at the thing having_been_happened to_him.

OET (OET-RV)and recognising that he was the man who usually sat outside begging at the ‘Beautiful Door’ of the temple, they were astonished and astounded at what had happened to him.

uW Translation Notes:

ἐπεγίνωσκον & αὐτὸν, ὅτι αὐτὸς ἦν ὁ & καθήμενος

˱they˲_˓were˒_recognizing & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπεγίνωσκον Δέ αὐτόν ὅτι αὐτός ἦν ὁ πρός τήν ἐλεημοσύνην καθήμενος ἐπί τῇ Ὡραίᾳ Πύλῃ τοῦ ἱεροῦ καί ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καί ἐκστάσεως ἐπί τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ)

Alternate translation: [they realized that he was the man who had been sitting]

Note 1 topic: translate-names

τῇ Ὡραίᾳ Πύλῃ

the Beautiful Gate

This was the name of one of the entrances to the temple area. See how you translated the similar expression in [3:2](../03/02.md).

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καὶ ἐκστάσεως ἐπὶ τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ

˱they˲_˓were˒_filled ˱with˲_amazement (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπεγίνωσκον Δέ αὐτόν ὅτι αὐτός ἦν ὁ πρός τήν ἐλεημοσύνην καθήμενος ἐπί τῇ Ὡραίᾳ Πύλῃ τοῦ ἱεροῦ καί ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καί ἐκστάσεως ἐπί τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: [what had happened to him filled them with wonder and amazement]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καὶ ἐκστάσεως ἐπὶ τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ

˱they˲_˓were˒_filled ˱with˲_amazement (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπεγίνωσκον Δέ αὐτόν ὅτι αὐτός ἦν ὁ πρός τήν ἐλεημοσύνην καθήμενος ἐπί τῇ Ὡραίᾳ Πύλῃ τοῦ ἱεροῦ καί ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καί ἐκστάσεως ἐπί τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ)

The words wonder and amazement mean similar things. Luke is using them together for emphasis. You can combine the words in your translation if that might be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [what had happened to him filled them with complete amazement]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καὶ ἐκστάσεως ἐπὶ τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ

˱they˲_˓were˒_filled ˱with˲_amazement (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπεγίνωσκον Δέ αὐτόν ὅτι αὐτός ἦν ὁ πρός τήν ἐλεημοσύνην καθήμενος ἐπί τῇ Ὡραίᾳ Πύλῃ τοῦ ἱεροῦ καί ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καί ἐκστάσεως ἐπί τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ)

Luke is speaking as if the people were containers that these responses could fill. Alternate translation: [what had happened to him made them completely amazed]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καὶ ἐκστάσεως ἐπὶ τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ

˱they˲_˓were˒_filled ˱with˲_amazement (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπεγίνωσκον Δέ αὐτόν ὅτι αὐτός ἦν ὁ πρός τήν ἐλεημοσύνην καθήμενος ἐπί τῇ Ὡραίᾳ Πύλῃ τοῦ ἱεροῦ καί ἐπλήσθησαν θάμβους καί ἐκστάσεως ἐπί τῷ συμβεβηκότι αὐτῷ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word wonder and amazement, you could express the same idea with verbs. Alternate translation: [they wondered and marveled greatly at what had happened to him]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:1-11 Jesus’ promise that his disciples would do even greater works than he had done (John 14:12; see Mark 16:20) was fulfilled in the signs, wonders, and mighty works of the apostles (Acts 2:43; 5:12; 8:4-8). Here, Peter clearly exercised the power to heal in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene (3:6, 16). The cure was instant and undeniable (3:8), resulting in the man’s praising God (3:8-9; cp. 2:47; 16:25; Luke 2:20; 17:15-18; 18:43; 19:37; 24:53). This is the first of many demonstrations of divine power given to disciples in Acts (Acts 4:24-31; 5:12; 6:8; 8:6; 9:33-42; 28:8).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
