OET (OET-RV)Now you all are the body of Christ, and each of you is a part of it.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–31: Use spiritual gifts to help the church

In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Using spiritual gifts

God gives spiritual gifts to each member of the body

About spiritual gifts

12:27a

Now you are the body of Christ,

Now: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Now introduces a change in topic. It is not a time word. Paul stopped discussing the image of the human body and started discussing how the image applies to Christ’s body, the church.

You should introduce this new part of Paul’s argument in a way that is natural in your language.

you are the body of Christ: The Greek pronoun you is plural and means “all of you together.” The body in this verse is no longer the human body. Paul began to talk about the church as a whole, which is Christ’s body. In some languages it may be helpful to make it clear that Paul referred to the believers as a group. For example:

you(plur) believers are the body of Christ

we(incl) are all the body of Christ

This is a figure of speech. In some languages it may be clearer to make this explicit with the word “like.” For example:

you(plur) are like the body of Christ

12:27b

and each of you is a member of it.

and each of you is a member of it: Paul talked about the believers as individuals. He explained what his figure of speech meant for the individual Christian. Each Christian is like one of the limbs or organs of the body of Christ. In some languages it may be helpful to make explicit the meaning of the pronoun it.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

and each one of you(plur) is like a member of the body

and you are all included in the body of Christ

and individually you are like its limbs and organs

General Comment on 12:27a-b

In some languages it may be natural to follow the RSV and use the same subject for the two parts of 12:27:

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (RSV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δέ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Δέ ἐστέ σῶμα Χριστοῦ καί μέλη ἐκ μέρους)

Here, Now introduces the application of what Paul has been saying about the body in [12:12–26](../12/12.md). You could use a word or phrase that would naturally introduce an application or explanation of what Paul has said in these verses. Alternate translation: [In the end,] or [What I mean is that]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὑμεῖς & ἐστε σῶμα Χριστοῦ, καὶ μέλη ἐκ μέρους

you_all & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς Δέ ἐστέ σῶμα Χριστοῦ καί μέλη ἐκ μέρους)

Here Paul speaks as if believers were members, or body parts, that together make up the body of Christ. By speaking in this way, he applies everything he has said in [12:12–26](../12/12.md) about “bodies” to the church, and he emphasizes the unity of the church. Paul used body language throughout this whole paragraph, and it is an important metaphor for 1 Corinthians and for Christian teaching. Because of this, you should preserve this metaphor or, if you must express the idea differently, use an analogy. Alternate translation: [it is as if you are the body of Christ and individually members of it] or [you function as the body of Christ, and individually you function as members of it]

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

μέλη ἐκ μέρους

members of part

Here, individually refers to how specific people are members of the body of Christ. In other words, discrete people can each be considered a “member”. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express individually with a word or phrase that identifies people on their own, apart from the communities in which they participate. Alternate translation: [each one of you is a member of it]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

12:12-31 The church is like a body (see 12:27) composed of many different parts, each with its own function as determined by God (see 12:11, 18, 28; Rom 12:4-5).
