OET (OET-LV)But right_now the god appointed the members, one each of_them in the body, as he_wanted.

OET (OET-RV)Actually, God has placed every part in our bodies exactly where he wanted to put them.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–31: Use spiritual gifts to help the church

In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Using spiritual gifts

God gives spiritual gifts to each member of the body

About spiritual gifts

12:18a

But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them,

But in fact: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as But in fact introduces the real situation. This is in contrast with verses 12:15–16 which were about situations that cannot occur.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

But the truth is

But actually the body is not like that

God has arranged the members of the body: The Greek word that the BSB translates as arranged means “placed” or “put.” God designed and arranged the human body when he created mankind.

the members: The word members refers to all the limbs and organs that make up the human body. See the note on 12:12a.

every one of them: The phrase every one of them is emphatic in Greek. The GNT shows this emphasis by translating it as:

every different part (GNT)

12:18b

according to His design.

according to His design: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as according to His design is literally “just as he willed/wished.”

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

as he decided/chose

according to his heart

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

νυνὶ δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: νυνί Δέ ὁ Θεός ἔθετο τά μέλη ἕν ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ σώματι καθώς ἠθέλησεν)

Here, But now introduces what is true, in contrast to the hypothetical situations Paul offered in the last verse ([12:17](../12/17.md)). Here, the word now does not refer to time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express But now with a word or phrase that introduces reality in contrast to a hypothetical situation. Alternate translation: [In reality, though,] or [As it really is,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

τὰ μέλη, ἓν ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ἐν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: νυνί Δέ ὁ Θεός ἔθετο τά μέλη ἕν ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ σώματι καθώς ἠθέλησεν)

Here Paul interrupts his sentence to include each one of them. In Paul’s culture, this interruption emphasized each one of them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could indicate why Paul interrupts his sentence by rearranging the phrases and expressing the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [each and every member in]

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

καθὼς ἠθέλησεν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: νυνί Δέ ὁ Θεός ἔθετο τά μέλη ἕν ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ σώματι καθώς ἠθέλησεν)

Here, just as he desired means that the God appointed the members as he decided, and not because of any other factors. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express desired with a word that refers to what God “decided” or “chose.” Alternate translation: [in the way that he chose]

OET (OET-RV)Actually, God has placed every part in our bodies exactly where he wanted to put them.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
