Section 12:1–31: Use spiritual gifts to help the church

In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.

All the different kinds of spiritual gifts come from the same Holy Spirit.

12:11a

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,

There is a conjunction in the Greek that the BSB and most other English versions do not translate. The GNT translates this word as “But.” Paul used this conjunction to introduce a contrast between the many different gifts and the one Spirit who gave these gifts. You should express this contrast in a way that is natural in your language.

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit: The clause All these are the work of one and the same Spirit means that the Holy Spirit produces all these gifts.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

There is only one Holy Spirit who gives all these gifts.

It is God’s Spirit alone who does all these things.

12:11b

who apportions them to each one as He determines.

who apportions them to each one as He determines: The Holy Spirit decides which gifts to give to each person, and he gives the gifts. In your translation, make sure that it is clear that both the word who and the pronoun He refer to the Spirit. One way to do this is to combine the clauses.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

distributing them at will to each individual (NJB)

decides which gifts to give to each of us (CEV)

who apportions them to each one: The phrase apportions them to each one implies that the Spirit gives gifts to every believer.

as He determines: The phrase as He determines means “as the Spirit decides.” The Holy Spirit decides to whom he will give each gift.

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express individually with a word or phrase that identifies people on their own, apart from the communities they participate in. Alternate translation: [by himself or herself] or [separately]
