You know that: The phrase You know that introduces some information that the Corinthians already knew.

when you were pagans: The Greek word that the BSB translates as pagans refers to people who do not believe in the true God.

There are two Greek particles here. The BSB does not translate them. The NET translates them as “often.” There are two ways to interpret these Greek particles:

  1. They indicate a repetitive aspect. The Corinthians were led to worship idols many times. For example:

    every time (GW) (NET, GW, NABRE, GNT)

  2. They indicate that Paul was not certain. He knew that the Corinthians followed idols, but he was not sure how or why. For example:

    somehow or other (NIV)

you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

you were influenced and led astray to mute idols: The verbs influenced and led astray are both passive verbs. It is not clear who influenced the Corinthians. Some possibilities are other people, or their own desires. If you can, you should translate this without naming a specific agent.

The Corinthians used to worship idols. In some languages it may be helpful to make this explicit. For example:

mute: The word mute means that the idols could not speak. In some languages a literal translation may suggest that the idols were alive but unable to speak. If a literal translation conveys this wrong meaning, it may be clearer to say:

dead/lifeless

dead and unable to speak

idols: The word idols refers to statues that people made and worshiped.

Paul uses this figure of speech here because he wants the Corinthians to think about how they used to worship idols as if somebody were “leading” them astray or away from the correct path. This figure of speech emphasizes that the Corinthians were going the wrong way and that someone or something was directing them to go that way. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [you wrongly followed mute idols, in whatever ways you followed them] or [you were urged to worship mute idols, in whatever ways you were urged to do so]
