OET (OET-LV) And divisions of_actions there_are, but the same god, which working the things all in all.
In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.
Here are some other possible section headings:
Using spiritual gifts
God gives spiritual gifts to each member of the body
About spiritual gifts
All the different kinds of spiritual gifts come from the same Holy Spirit.
There are different ways of working,
There are different kinds of work to do,
We(incl) can work in various/different ways,
There are different ways of working: The Greek word for different ways is the same as in 12:4 and 12:5.
There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as working.
It refers to actions or activities. For example:
There are different types of work to do (GW) (BSB, GW, CEV, NIV, ESV)
It refers to the results of the service done in v.5. For example:
there are different results (NET) (NET, NASB)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is supported by many English versions and many commentaries.See, for example, Fee p.186, and Verbrugge & Harris p.364.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
we can each do different things (CEV)
there are a variety of activities
everybody has a different work to do
but the same God works all things in all people.
but it is the same God who makes it possible for everyone to do all of them.
but in every activity it is the one God who strengthens/enables us(incl) all.
but the same God works all things in all people: It is the one true God who strengthens every believer to serve in some way.
Here are some other ways to translate this clause:
the same God produces every gift in every person (GW)
the one God is acting in all of them and in all people
the one God makes it possible for everybody to do all of them
all things: The phrase all things refers to the different kinds of activities mentioned in 12:6a.
people: The word people refers to all believers.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
διαιρέσεις ἐνεργημάτων
divisions ˱of˲_actions
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind varieties, you can express the idea by using an adjective such as “various” or “different.” Alternate translation: [various workings] or [different workings]
Note 2 topic: translate-unknown
ἐνεργημάτων
˱of˲_actions
Here, workings refers to “activities” or “actions,” that is, doing things. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express workings with a word or phrase that refers generally to “doing things.” Alternate translation: [of activities] or [of ways to do things]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
ὁ αὐτὸς Θεός
the ¬which (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί διαιρέσεις ἐνεργημάτων εἰσίν καί ὁ αὐτός Θεός ὁ ἐνεργῶν τά παντᾶ ἐν πᾶσιν)
Here Paul omits some words that your language may require to make a complete thought. Paul implies that it is the same God who empowers the varieties of workings. If your readers would not infer that information, and if your language requires these words to make a complete thought, you could supply them. Alternate translation: [it is the same God]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί διαιρέσεις ἐνεργημάτων εἰσίν καί ὁ αὐτός Θεός ὁ ἐνεργῶν τά παντᾶ ἐν πᾶσιν)
Here, all things in everyone could refer: (1) specifically to all gifts, ministries, and workings that God is working in everyone who believes. Alternate translation: [each of these things in each person] (2) generally to how God is working all things in “everything and everyone.” Alternate translation: [everything in everyone] or [all things in every situation]
12:6 All the work believers do for God is in fact God working through them (see 15:10; 2 Cor 4:7; Gal 2:8; Phil 2:13; cp. Gal 2:20).
OET (OET-LV) And divisions of_actions there_are, but the same god, which working the things all in all.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
