OET (OET-RV) Does everyone have the gifts of healing, or speaking in other languages, or translating?
In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.
Here are some other possible section headings:
Using spiritual gifts
God gives spiritual gifts to each member of the body
About spiritual gifts
Do all have gifts of healing?
Are they/you all able to heal others? No.
Not all of us(incl) can heal sick people.
Do all have gifts of healing?: This is a rhetorical question. Paul’s readers knew that not everybody has the gift of healing.
Here are some other ways to translate this rhetorical question:
Do all believers have the gift of being able to heal the sick?
Not all of you(plur) have the ability to heal those who are sick.
gifts of healing: Translate gifts of healing the same as you did in 12:28.
Do all speak in tongues?
Can they/you all speak in unknown tongues? No.
We(incl) do not all speak in unknown/miraculous languages.
Do all speak in tongues?: This is a rhetorical question. Paul’s readers knew that not everybody can speak in tongues.
Here are some other ways to translate this rhetorical question:
Can all believers speak in various languages? No!
Not all of you(plur) can speak in unknown/miraculous languages.
Do all interpret?
Can they/you all explain the meaning of those languages? No.
And not all of us(incl) can translate/interpret those languages.
Do all interpret?: This is a rhetorical question. Paul referred to interpreting the tongues he had just mentioned. He said that not everyone is able to explain the meaning when people speak in tongues.
Here are some other ways to translate this rhetorical question:
Are all believers able to explain the meaning of those languages? No!
Not all of you(plur) are able to interpret/translate when people speak those languages.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
μὴ πάντες χαρίσματα ἔχουσιν ἰαμάτων? μὴ πάντες γλώσσαις λαλοῦσιν? μὴ πάντες διερμηνεύουσιν?
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Μή πάντες χαρίσματα ἔχουσιν ἰαμάτων Μή πάντες γλώσσαις λαλοῦσιν Μή πάντες διερμηνεύουσιν)
Paul does not ask these questions because he is looking for information. Rather, he asks them to involve the Corinthians in what he is arguing. The questions assume that the answer is “no, they do not.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express these questions by stating the ideas as strong negations. Alternate translation: [Not all have gifts of healing. Not all speak in tongues. Not all interpret.]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
γλώσσαις
˱with˲_tongues
Here, tongues refers to something that one does with one’s “tongue,” which is to speak a language. If it would be helpful in your language, you could indicate that tongues is a way of speaking about “languages” by using a comparable term or expressing the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [in other languages]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
διερμηνεύουσιν
˓are˒_interpreting
Here Paul is speaking about the same “gift” that he mentioned in [12:10](../12/10.md) as “the interpretation of tongues.” He does not mention what the person “interprets” here because he knows that the Corinthians will infer that he is speaking about the tongues in the previous question. If your readers would not infer what the person “interprets,” you could state it explicitly. Alternate translation: [interpret tongues, do they]
12:12-31 The church is like a body (see 12:27) composed of many different parts, each with its own function as determined by God (see 12:11, 18, 28; Rom 12:4-5).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
