Section 12:1–31: Use spiritual gifts to help the church

In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.

All the different kinds of spiritual gifts come from the same Holy Spirit.

12:7

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Each believer is given evidence of the Spirit’s presence, for the benefit/good of all.
God gives each of us gifts which shows that the Spirit is present. We are to use these gifts for the good of all believers.

Now: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Now introduces a new argument on the same theme as 12:4–6. This verse introduces and summarizes the content of 12:8–11. Some English versions do not translate this conjunction explicitly. Translate this conjunction in a way that is appropriate for introducing a new argument.

to each one: The phrase to each one means “to every believer.” This included Paul and his readers.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

If you use the first-person plural pronoun (we/us), you should be consistent and use that pronoun in the following verses also.

the manifestation of the Spirit is given: This is a passive clause. The implied subject is God. In some languages it may be natural to make the verb active and make the subject explicit. For example:

God gives the manifestation of the Spirit.

the manifestation of the Spirit: The manifestation of the Spirit refers to the spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit gives.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

God gives gifts which show that the Spirit is present

we receive gifts which are a sign that we have the Spirit

God gives each of us a gift. This gift shows that we are influenced by the Spirit

for the common good: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as for the common good is more literally “for profit/benefit.” It means that what God gives is for the good of the whole church.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

for the good of all people

so that we can all help each other

we should use these gifts to be useful to our fellow believers

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses this form to focus on the gifts rather than focusing on the one who gives them. If you must state who did the action, Paul implies that “God” did it (See: [12:6](../12/06.md)). Alternate translation: [to each one God gives]

Here Paul uses the possessive form to indicate how the Spirit is revealed by the outward display. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind that the outward display is a revelation of the Spiritwith a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: [the ability to outwardly display the Spirit] or [a way to outwardly display the Spirit]
