SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–31: Use spiritual gifts to help the church

In this section Paul wrote about different spiritual gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit gives to believers. He listed some of these spiritual gifts and taught that God gave them to us to help the church. He compared the body of Christ with the human body in order to explain that all of the spiritual gifts are important to the church.

Here are some other possible section headings:

About spiritual gifts

Paragraph 12:4–11

All the different kinds of spiritual gifts come from the same Holy Spirit.

12:4

There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.

There is a Greek conjunction which connects 12:4–11 to the previous paragraph. The BSB does not translate this conjunction. The RSV and some other versions translate this word as “Now.” This paragraph returns to the topic of spiritual gifts. You should make this connection in a way that is natural in your language.

There are different gifts, but the same Spirit: This has some implied information. It may be necessary to say explicitly that the Spirit gives the gifts. For example:

There are different gifts, but the same Spirit gives them to us

The gifts are of many different kinds, but they come from the same Spirit

different: The word different refers to varieties or variations of gifts. The gifts that the Spirit gives are not all the same.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

there are many gifts

there are gifts that are different from one another

gifts: The Greek word that the BSB translates as gifts is the same word as in 1:7 and 7:7, and you should translate it the same way.

the same Spirit: The phrase the same Spirit refers to God’s Spirit. It is God’s Holy Spirit who gives spiritual gifts to each believer.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

the one Spirit of God gives them to us

it is the Holy Spirit alone who gives them to us

Make sure that your words do not imply that there is more than one Holy Spirit.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

διαιρέσεις & χαρισμάτων

divisions & ˱of˲_gifts

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind varieties, you can express the idea by using an adjective such as “various” or “different.” Alternate translation: [various gifts] or [different gifts]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

τὸ & αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: διαιρέσεις Δέ χαρισμάτων εἰσίν τό δέ αὐτό Πνεῦμα)

Here Paul omits some words that your language may require to make a complete thought. Paul implies that it is the same Spirit who gives the varieties of gifts. If your readers would not infer that information, and if your language requires these words to make a complete thought, you could supply them. Alternate translation: [the same Spirit gives them all]
