Section 15:1–58: Believers will rise from the dead

In this section Paul reminded the Corinthian believers about the gospel and showed them that the resurrection from the dead was an important part of the gospel. First (15:1–11) he wrote about the evidence showing that God raised Christ from the dead. Then (15:12–34) he taught that God will raise believers from the dead. Finally (15:35–58) he taught about what the resurrection body will be like.

Paragraph 15:12–19

In this paragraph Paul said that it is important to believe in the resurrection of the dead. If the dead are not raised, then Christ was not raised. If Christ was not raised, then his people are not saved.

Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

Then…also: The Greek words that the BSB translates as Then…also introduces the third of the three consequences if Christ did not rise from the dead. Here is another way to translate this:

It would also mean that (GNT)

those…who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished: Paul indicated that if Christ did not rise, then believers who died are still in their sins. They died in a state of guilt, unreconciled with God.

those…who have fallen asleep in Christ: The phrase fallen asleep in Christ is another way to speak about believers who died. See also 15:6b.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

the believers in Christ who have died (GNT)

all who have died believing in Christ (NLT)

have perished: The phrase have perished indicates a state without hope. If Christ was not raised from the dead, then believers who have died will never be raised from the dead.

Here, then also introduces another inference from the conditional statement “if Christ has not been raised” in [15:17](../15/17.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express that then also connects to the beginning of the previous verse by restating the premise from that verse. Paul is referring to people who have died as the ones having fallen asleep. This is a polite way of referring to something unpleasant. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the ones having fallen asleep with a different polite way of referring to those who have died, or you could express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [those who have passed away] or [those who are dead]

Here Paul uses the spatial metaphor in Christ to describe the union of believers with Christ. In this case, being in Christ, or united to Christ, identifies the ones having fallen asleep as those who have believed in Christ. Alternate translation: [who believed in Christ] or [who are believers]
