Section 15:1–58: Believers will rise from the dead

In this section Paul reminded the Corinthian believers about the gospel and showed them that the resurrection from the dead was an important part of the gospel. First (15:1–11) he wrote about the evidence showing that God raised Christ from the dead. Then (15:12–34) he taught that God will raise believers from the dead. Finally (15:35–58) he taught about what the resurrection body will be like.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Paragraph 15:50–58

In this paragraph Paul finished answering the questions of 15:35. He said that God will transform both living believers and dead believers so that they can live in God’s heavenly kingdom.

But thanks be to God,

But thanks be to God: The expression thanks be to God is a call to give thanks to God.

Here are some other ways to translate this expression:

who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ: Paul gave the reason for his exclamation of thanks in 15:57a. He is thankful that God makes his people victorious over sin and death through the Lord Jesus Christ.

who gives us the victory: The phrase who gives us the victory means that God makes his people able to win the victory. In some languages it may be natural to avoid the abstract noun victory and say:

he helps us(incl) win

In some languages it may be necessary to say what God gives believers the victory over:

He gives us victory over sin and death (NLT)

who makes us(incl) able to conquer death

because of him we will no longer die

because of him we are no longer afraid of death

through our Lord Jesus Christ: Here is another way to translate this phrase:

because of what our Lord Jesus Christ did

General Comment on 15:57a-b

Paul thanked God for giving us the victory. In some languages it may be natural to express this in two sentences, as the NIV does:

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (NIV)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this phrase with a normal way in your language to thank or praise someone for what that person has done. Alternate translation: [we thank God] or [we give glory to God]
