OET (OET-LV)For/Because it_was_made_evident to_me concerning you_all, brothers of_me, by the ones of_loaʸ, that quarrels among you_all are.

OET (OET-RV)because, my brothers and sisters, it’s been made clear to me by some from Chloe’s household, that you are quarrelling among yourselves.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:10–2:16: Believers should not divide up into competing factions. They should be united by true wisdom, the message of the cross.

In this section Paul wrote about a serious problem in the Corinthian church. The Corinthian believers were dividing up into competing groups. They were following whichever human leader they admired the most. Paul tried to solve this problem by reminding the Corinthians of the message of the cross. He wanted them to stop following human wisdom and to follow God’s wisdom.

Paragraph 1:10–17

There were divisions among the believers at Corinth. They divided into groups according to which leader they thought was the best one to follow. Paul taught them that Christ was not divided, so neither should his church be divided. His message was that all believers are united in Christ.

1:11a

My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me

In the Greek, this verse is connected to the previous verse 10 by a conjunction. It is often translated as “For.” For example:

For some people from Chloe’s family… (GNT) (GNT, RSV, NLT, KJV, NRSV, NET, ESV, NASB)

Here the conjunction introduces Paul’s reason for making his appeal in verse 10. 10He appealed to the Corinthian believers to agree with one another 11because he found out there were quarrels among them.

Another way to translate this is:

I appeal to you because…

I say this because…

In some languages, it will be more natural to put the reason clause (in 11) before the result clause (in 10). For example:

11My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 10Therefore I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

My brothers: See note on 1:1c and 1:10a. As in 10a, you should research/check where it is most natural to place this phrase in your language. For example, the RSV places it at the end of the verse. The GNT places it in the middle of the verse.

some from Chloe’s household have informed me: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as some from Chloe’s household have informed me is more literally “it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people.” In Greek, this clause is passive. Translate this is a way that is natural in your language.

Some ways to translate this phrase are:

some from Chloe’s household: In the Greek this is literally “those of Chloe,” that is, Chloe’s people. This phrase could refer to either some of Chloe’s relatives, or to some servants or slaves who worked for Chloe. Chloe was a woman, probably a rich business woman. We do not know where she lived.

Apparently some of Chloe’s relatives or workers traveled from Corinth to Ephesus where Paul was staying. They reported about the divisions among the believers in Corinth to Paul.

1:11b

that there are quarrels among you.

there are quarrels among you: The word quarrels here refers to spoken arguments rather than to physical fighting. If it is more natural in your language to translate quarrels as a verb, consider doing so here. It may also be necessary to say what the disagreements were about. For example:

you are quarreling about who is the best leader

you are quarreling about which leader/teacher is the best to follow

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γάρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐδηλώθη Γάρ μοί περί ὑμῶν ἀδελφοί μού ὑπό τῶν Χλόης ὅτι ἔριδες ἐν ὑμῖν εἰσίν)

Here, For introduces the reason why Paul is urging them to become united together. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express for with a short phrase to express the idea. Alternate translation: [I speak this way because]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐδηλώθη & μοι περὶ ὑμῶν, ἀδελφοί μου, ὑπὸ τῶν Χλόης

˱it˲_˓was˒_made_evident & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐδηλώθη Γάρ μοί περί ὑμῶν ἀδελφοί μού ὑπό τῶν Χλόης ὅτι ἔριδες ἐν ὑμῖν εἰσίν)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on what was made clear rather than the people making it clear. Alternate translation: [those of Chloe have made it clear to me concerning you, my brothers,]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀδελφοί μου

brothers (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐδηλώθη Γάρ μοί περί ὑμῶν ἀδελφοί μού ὑπό τῶν Χλόης ὅτι ἔριδες ἐν ὑμῖν εἰσίν)

Although brothers is masculine, Paul is using it to refer to both men or women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express brothers with a non gendered word or refer to both genders. Alternate translation: [my brothers and sisters]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῶν Χλόης

the_‹ones› ˱of˲_Chloe

Here, those of Chloe refers to people who are connected to Chloe and probably live in her house or work for her. Paul does not tell us whether they are family members, slaves, or employees. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning of this phrase with a word or phrase that indicates that these people are related to or dependent on Chloe. Alternate translation: [people connected to Chloe]

Note 5 topic: translate-names

Χλόης

˱of˲_Chloe

Chloe is the name of a woman.

Note 6 topic: translate-unknown

ἔριδες ἐν ὑμῖν εἰσιν

quarrels among you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐδηλώθη Γάρ μοί περί ὑμῶν ἀδελφοί μού ὑπό τῶν Χλόης ὅτι ἔριδες ἐν ὑμῖν εἰσίν)

Here, factions refers to quarrels or strife among groups within a community. These quarrels or fights are not physical but verbal. If possible, use a word that refers to verbal conflict or express the idea with a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: [you have verbal fights with each other]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:11 Chloe was a Corinthian woman, not mentioned elsewhere in Scripture.
