OET (OET-LV)so_as you_all not to_be_being_lacked in nothing a_gift, eagerly_waiting the revelation of_the master of_us, Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah,

OET (OET-RV)so that you all aren’t missing out on any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our master Yeshua Messiah to be revealed.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:1–9: Paul began his letter

Paul began his letter to the Corinthian believers by greeting them. Then he thanked God for helping them.

Paragraph 1:4–9

In this paragraph Paul told the Corinthian believers what he wanted to thank God for. He thanked God for all he had done to help the believers in Corinth. Paul said that he was thankful that God had given them spiritual gifts, especially the ability to speak well about spiritual things and to know spiritual things.

Verses 1:4–8 are one long sentence in the Greek, with the one main verb “I thank” in 1:4. The BSB translated these verses using several shorter sentences. Each sentence tells something for which Paul thanked God. See the General Comment at the end of 1:9 for another suggestion.

1:7a

Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift

Therefore: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Therefore is literally “so that.” It introduces the result of what was stated previously. There are two interpretations about what this conjunction refers to:

  1. It refers back to verse 5. Verse 5a contains the main verb of the sentence which is “enriched.” For example:

in every way you were enriched in him…so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift… (RSV) (RSV, NRSV, NET, NLT)

  2. It refers back to verse 6. For example:

The message about Christ has become so firmly established in you that you have not failed to receive a single blessing… (GNT) (NCV, GNT)

It is recommended that you translate this conjunction so that Therefore refers back to verse 5 since a majority of English versions support this. For example:

God blessed/enriched the Corinthians with every kind of spiritual gift, and therefore they did not lack any spiritual gift.

you do not lack any spiritual gift: God’s Spirit had given to the Corinthian believers all the abilities they needed to do God’s work. Each person did not have every gift, but together as a church they had every gift they needed.

The verb phrase you do not lack is a double negative. In some languages it is more natural to translate it in the positive. For example:

you have every gift from God… (NCV)

you have every spiritual gift you need… (NLT)

any spiritual gift: The Greek word that the BSB translates as gift here means a special ability or skill. The BSB has supplied the word spiritual. It is spiritual in the sense that it is a gift from God’s Spirit. The Spirit gives these special abilities to believers so that they can serve God.

1:7b

as you eagerly await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

as you eagerly await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as eagerly await is literally “waiting.” It refers to eagerly expecting something to happen. Here Paul indicated that believers are waiting for what will happen at the end of the time we live in. Then Jesus Christ will come back to earth. Other ways to translate this verse part are:

while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to come again (NCV)

while you are eagerly waiting for the time when our Lord Jesus Christ will appear

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ὥστε

so_as

Here, so that could introduce: (1) a result from “being made rich” in [1:5](../01/05.md) and from the confirmation of the “testimony” in [1:6](../01/06.md). If you use one of the following alternate translations, you may need to end the previous sentence with a period and begin a new sentence. Alternate translation: [God has made you rich and confirmed our testimony so that] (2) a result from just the confirmation in [1:6](../01/06.md). Alternate translation: [God confirmed our testimony among you so that]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

ὑμᾶς μὴ ὑστερεῖσθαι ἐν μηδενὶ χαρίσματι

you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε ὑμᾶς μή ὑστερεῖσθαι ἐν μηδενί χαρίσματι ἀπεκδεχομένους τήν ἀποκάλυψιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)

Here Paul uses two negative words, not and lack, to express a strong positive meaning. He means that the Corinthians have every spiritual gift that God gives. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this form in positive form. Alternate translation: [you have every gift]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-time-simultaneous

χαρίσματι, ἀπεκδεχομένους

˓a˒_gift eagerly_waiting

Here, eagerly waiting for introduces something that happens at the same time as not lacking in any gift. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this connection explicitly. Alternate translation: [gift while you eagerly wait for]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ;

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε ὑμᾶς μή ὑστερεῖσθαι ἐν μηδενί χαρίσματι ἀπεκδεχομένους τήν ἀποκάλυψιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)

Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe a revelation whose content is our Lord Jesus Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this explicit by translating the phrase with a verb with “God” or our Lord Jesus Christ as the subject. Alternate translation: [God to reveal our Lord Jesus Christ] or [our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε ὑμᾶς μή ὑστερεῖσθαι ἐν μηδενί χαρίσματι ἀπεκδεχομένους τήν ἀποκάλυψιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)

In this context, it is clear that Paul does not simply mean that knowledge about our Lord Jesus Christ will be revealed. Rather, he means that our Lord Jesus Christ himself will return to earth. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this phrase with a word such as “return” to make this idea clear. Alternate translation: [the return of our Lord Jesus Christ]
