Section 1:1–9: Paul began his letter

Paul began his letter to the Corinthian believers by greeting them. Then he thanked God for helping them.

Paragraph 1:4–9

In this paragraph Paul told the Corinthian believers what he wanted to thank God for. He thanked God for all he had done to help the believers in Corinth. Paul said that he was thankful that God had given them spiritual gifts, especially the ability to speak well about spiritual things and to know spiritual things.

Verses 1:4–8 are one long sentence in the Greek, with the one main verb “I thank” in 1:4. The BSB translated these verses using several shorter sentences. Each sentence tells something for which Paul thanked God. See the General Comment at the end of 1:9 for another suggestion.

1:5a

For in Him you have been enriched in every way,

For: The Greek word that the BSB translates as For here can be interpreted in three ways:

  1. It introduces an explanation of the previous clause “the grace given to you.”See Barrett p. 36; Thiselton p. 90. See Fee p. 38; Ellingworth and Hatton p. 12; Hodge p. 6. English versions that follow this interpretation often do not explicitly translate this conjunction. Other versions may start a new sentence with For. Verse 1:4 can be joined to 1:5a with a dash. For example:

    I am always thankful to God for what the gift of his grace in Christ Jesus has meant to you—how…he has enriched your whole lives (JBP) (BSB, NJB, GW, NLT, NIV, GNT, NET)

  2. It introduces the reason why Paul gave thanks to God.See Garland p. 32. For example:

    I thank God because… (NCV) (NCV, NRSV)

  3. It introduces what Paul thanked God for. He thanked God that the Corinthians were enriched.See Conzelmann p. 25 fn 3. For example:

    that in every way… (RSV) (RSV, KJV, NASB, ESV, REB)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This interpretation is supported by many recent commentaries. In some languages it may be more natural to translate it with a word meaning “that is.” For example:

that is, in him you have been enriched in every way

in Him: The phrase in Him means the same as “in Christ Jesus” in 1:4b. God had given the Corinthian believers these special abilities because they were united to Christ.

you have been enriched in every way: This clause indicates that the Corinthian believers had received from God many different special abilities. It does not mean that God had made them literally rich or wealthy.

This is a passive clause. Some ways to translate it are:

in every way: The phrase in every way means “in many different ways,” or “in all sorts of different ways.” The Corinthian believers did not lack anything they needed to serve the Lord. They had not, however, each received all the gifts.

1:5b

in all speech

in all speech: In 1:5b-c Paul talked about two specific kinds of special abilities that the Corinthian believers had received from God. The first is speech. Paul meant that they had received the ability to speak about spiritual things and tell others God’s message. He was not referring to the general ability to speak fluently.

and all knowledge,

and: The conjunction and here indicates a second ability that the Corinthian believers had received from God.

all knowledge: This special gift of knowledge refers to the ability to understand what God’s message means. In some languages it may be more natural to translate the word knowledge as a verb phrase. For example:

you are able to understand spiritual things

Here, For introduces an explanation of “the grace of God that was given” in [1:4](../01/04.md). Use a word or phrase that introduces a further explanation or elaboration in your language. Alternate translation: [That is,]

Here Paul speaks as if the Corinthians had received a lot of money in him. With this language of being rich, Paul means that the Corinthians have received more than they need, and [1:7](../01/07.md) shows that what they have received are spiritual blessings and gifts. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate made rich to: (1) express this idea with a phrase that refers to how much God has given them. Alternate translation: [you were given many gifts] (2) clarify that Paul speaks of spiritual riches. Alternate translation: [you were made spiritually rich]

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are made rich rather than the person “making” them rich. If you must state who does the action, Paul implies that “God” does it. Alternate translation: [God has made you rich]

Here, him refers to Jesus, since God the Father is the one who makes the Corinthians rich. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express him with the words “Christ” or “Christ Jesus” to make this clear. Alternate translation: [in Christ Jesus]

1:5 God had enriched the Corinthian church spiritually, specifically in eloquent words and knowledge. This probably refers to the spiritual messages and understanding (see 1:7) on which the church prided itself. Word and knowledge occur frequently in this letter: Paul acknowledges the abundant spiritual gifts that God has given the church in Corinth. Later, he corrects their distorted perspectives on these gifts (see 1:18–2:5; 3:18-20; 12:1–14:40).
