OET (OET-LV)as the testimony of_the chosen_one/messiah was_confirmed in you_all,

OET (OET-RV)as our testimony about the messiah[fn] was confirmed in you all

1:6 Or alternatively: as the messiah’s testimony…

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:1–9: Paul began his letter

Paul began his letter to the Corinthian believers by greeting them. Then he thanked God for helping them.

Paragraph 1:4–9

In this paragraph Paul told the Corinthian believers what he wanted to thank God for. He thanked God for all he had done to help the believers in Corinth. Paul said that he was thankful that God had given them spiritual gifts, especially the ability to speak well about spiritual things and to know spiritual things.

Verses 1:4–8 are one long sentence in the Greek, with the one main verb “I thank” in 1:4. The BSB translated these verses using several shorter sentences. Each sentence tells something for which Paul thanked God. See the General Comment at the end of 1:9 for another suggestion.

1:6

because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.

because: There are two ways to interpret the Greek conjunction here:

  1. It means “just as, even as,” or “in this way.” What God did in 1:5 (enriched the Corinthian believers) is how he did what is stated/said in 1:6 (confirmed the testimony). As God enriched the Corinthian believers with spiritual gifts, so he confirmed or proved true the testimony about Christ. For example:

God has enriched your church in every way….This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. (NLT04) (KJV, NASB, RSV, ESV, NET, NCV)

  2. It means because and introduces the reason for the Corinthian believers receiving spiritual gifts. They were enriched because the testimony about Christ had been confirmed in them. For example:

because what we testified about Christ has been confirmed… (REB) (BSB, NIV, REB)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), which is supported by several commentaries.

our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you: The verb was confirmed is in the passive form. The whole clause probably means “God confirmed among you our testimony about Christ.” There are two different ways to translate this clause:

was confirmed: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as was confirmed can be interpreted in two ways:

  1. It means “was proved or shown to be true.” For example:

has been verified (GW) (BSB, GW, NIV, NLT, CEV, RSV, NET, ESV, REB, NASB, KJV)

  2. It means “was established” or “was strengthened.” For example:

has become established (JBP) (GNT, NJB, JBP, NRSV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1) since it has stronger support in English versions.

The implied subject of the passive verb was confirmed is God. God gave evidence that the testimony about Christ was true by giving spiritual gifts to the Corinthians.

in you: There are two ways to interpret the phrase in you here:

  1. It means among you; that is, among the believers in Corinth, or in the church. For example:

was confirmed among you (ESV) (NET, RSV, ESV, GW, NLT)

  2. It means in you; that is, within the hearts and lives of the individual Corinthian believers. For example:

Has been confirmed in your experience (REB) (BSB, NIV, NJB, GNT, KJV, NASB, REB)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). The majority of Greek scholars support this.

The fact that God enriched the members of the Corinthian church confirmed that the message about Christ was true.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

καθὼς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καθώς τό μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη ἐν ὑμῖν)

Here, just as could introduce: (1) the reason why the Corinthians were made rich. Alternate translation: [which is due to how] (2) a comparison that illustrates how the Corinthians were made rich. Alternate translation: [in the same way that]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καθώς τό μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη ἐν ὑμῖν)

In this verse, Paul speaks as if what he told the Corinthians about Christ were testimony he gave as a witness in a court of law. This testimony has been confirmed, just as if other evidence proved to the judge that his testimony was accurate. With this metaphor, Paul reminds the Corinthians that they have believed the message about Christ and that it is now an important part of their lives. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this metaphor with a comparable metaphor or express it plainly. Alternate translation: [our message about Christ has been established]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καθώς τό μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη ἐν ὑμῖν)

Here Paul uses the possessive form to speak about a testimony that concerns Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make it explicit that Christ is the content of the testimony. Alternate translation: [the testimony about Christ]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καθώς τό μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη ἐν ὑμῖν)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on what is confirmed rather than the person doing the “confirming.” If you must state who does the action, Paul implies that “God” does it. Alternate translation: [God has confirmed the testimony of Christ]
