OET (OET-LV)Faithful is the god, by whom you_all_were_called into fellowship of_the son of_him, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, the master of_us.

OET (OET-RV)The God who called you into fellowship with his son Yeshua Messiah, our master, is faithful.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:1–9: Paul began his letter

Paul began his letter to the Corinthian believers by greeting them. Then he thanked God for helping them.

Paragraph 1:4–9

In this paragraph Paul told the Corinthian believers what he wanted to thank God for. He thanked God for all he had done to help the believers in Corinth. Paul said that he was thankful that God had given them spiritual gifts, especially the ability to speak well about spiritual things and to know spiritual things.

Verses 1:4–8 are one long sentence in the Greek, with the one main verb “I thank” in 1:4. The BSB translated these verses using several shorter sentences. Each sentence tells something for which Paul thanked God. See the General Comment at the end of 1:9 for another suggestion.

1:9

God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

God…is faithful: The clause God…is faithful means that God always does what he says he will do. God called us into fellowship with his Son. Thus we can trust him to give us the blessings of verses 4–8. Another way to translate this is:

God will surely do this for you, for he always does just what he says (NLT96)

called: The Greek word that the BSB translates as called is the same word found in 1:1a. It means that God chose/invited/appointed the Corinthian believers to be united with Jesus.

fellowship with His Son: The Greek word that the BSB translates as fellowship means “to have something in common with someone.” It means that these people who have a common desire/goal will have a close relationship.

Here it means that God has put us into a close relationship with his Son. Thus, we share with him in the life and honor that God has given him. Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

to share in the life of his Son (REB)

partners with his Son (GW, CEV)

to share everything with his Son (NCV)

His Son: The phrase His Son further describes “Jesus Christ our Lord.” “God’s Son” or “the Son of God” is a title that was often used to refer to a savior who would be a descendant of King David. God would send this savior to rescue his people. This person was often referred to as the “Messiah” or “Christ.”

The title “the Son of God” also indicates that Jesus has the same nature and character as God. The relationship between God the Father and Jesus, his Son, is similar in some way to the relationship between human fathers and sons. God the Father does not have a physical body. He did not have a sexual relationship with Mary that resulted in her becoming pregnant and giving birth to Jesus. The Son of God existed eternally as the Son with his Father.

In areas where people do not understand the title “the Son of God” in this way, you may want to include a footnote that explains the correct meaning. Here is a suggested footnote:

This title refers to Jesus. It indicates that Jesus has the same nature and character as God. It does not mean that God the Father had a sexual relationship with Mary that resulted in her becoming pregnant and giving birth to Jesus. Mary became pregnant with Jesus in a miraculous way by the Holy Spirit of God.

In some languages, it is natural to speak of a son as a “child,” without specifying male or female. If that is true in your language, you may use a more general term, such as:

his ChildA translation of the title “the Son of God” must include a familial term such as “son” or “child.” Translations such as “the man who is God,” “the divine man,” or “the God man” are not acceptable, since they do not retain familial language. Examples of acceptable translation options include “the Son who comes from God,” and “the divine/unique/eternal Son of God.”

Other verses will usually make clear that Jesus was a male child. If you use a phrase such as “his male child,” be sure that it does not imply that God had another child who was female.

General Comment on 1:9

There are two main ideas in this verse. The main idea is that God is faithful. The BSB translates one idea inside the other idea. You may wish to separate the ideas and show that one is the main idea. For example:

God faithfully keeps his promises. He called you to be partners with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. (GW)

God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (NLT04)

General Comment on 1:4–9

There are many ways to divide these verses into shorter sentences. For example:

4I always thank God for you because Christ Jesus has shown you God’s good will. 5Through Christ Jesus you have become rich in every way—in speech and knowledge of every kind. 6Our message about Christ has been verified among you. 7Therefore, you don’t lack any gift as you wait eagerly for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8He will continue to give you strength until the end so that no one can accuse you of anything on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God faithfully keeps his promises. He called you to be partners with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

δι’ οὗ ἐκλήθητε

by whom ˱you_all˲_˓were˒_called

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on those who are called rather than the person doing the “calling.” Alternate translation: [who called you]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

εἰς κοινωνίαν τοῦ Υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ

into fellowship ˱of˲_the Son ˱of˲_him

Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe fellowship that is with his Son. If it would be helpful in your language, you could: (1) use a word such as “with” to make this clear. Alternate translation: [into fellowship with his Son] (2) translate fellowship with a verb such as “share in” or “commune with.” Alternate translation: [to commune with his Son]

Note 3 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

τοῦ Υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ

˱of˲_the Son ˱of˲_him

Son is an important title for Jesus and identifies his relationship with God the Father.
