Section 1:10–2:16: Believers should not divide up into competing factions. They should be united by true wisdom, the message of the cross.

In this section Paul wrote about a serious problem in the Corinthian church. The Corinthian believers were dividing up into competing groups. They were following whichever human leader they admired the most. Paul tried to solve this problem by reminding the Corinthians of the message of the cross. He wanted them to stop following human wisdom and to follow God’s wisdom.

Paragraph 1:10–17

There were divisions among the believers at Corinth. They divided into groups according to which leader they thought was the best one to follow. Paul taught them that Christ was not divided, so neither should his church be divided. His message was that all believers are united in Christ.

1:14

I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

I am thankful to God that I only baptized Crispus and Gaius from among you,
I thank God that there were only two of you Corinthian believers, namely Crispus and Gaius, whom I baptized.
I only baptized Crispus and Gaius in Corinth. I am thankful/glad that I did not baptize any others of/among you.

I thank God: There is a textual issue here.

Some Greek manuscripts include the Greek word God. For example:
I thank God… (NRSV)
(BSB, CEV, KJV, NLT, NRSV, ESV, GW, NLT, NCV, NET, NASB, GNT)
Other Greek manuscripts do not have this Greek word. For example:
I am thankful (NJB) (NIV, RSV, NJB, JBP)

It is recommended that you follow option (1). The majority of English versions follow this option. However, both options have the same basic meaning.

Paul did not mean that he actually prayed and thanked God that he had not baptized many people in Corinth. Rather, he meant that he felt grateful that God had guided him to do what would be best later on. Be sure to translate this clause in the way that is most natural in your language. Some other ways to translate this are:

I am thankful to God that

Thanks be to God that

Thank God… (REB)

I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius: In some languages it may be more natural to translate this as a positive statement. For example:

I baptized only Crispus and Gaius from among all of you.

of your church members I only baptized Crispus and Gaius

any of you: The phrase any of you means any of the Corinthian believers. With the negative “not” it means “none of the members of the church at Corinth.”

Crispus and Gaius: These are both names of males.
