OET (OET-RV) “Why are you crying, my master?” Haza’el asked.
¶ “Because I know what evil things you’ll do to the Israelis,” he said. “You’ll burn down their fortresses and kill their young men with the sword. You’ll smash their children’s heads on rocks, and rip open the bellies of their pregnant women.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person
מַדּ֖וּעַ אֲדֹנִ֣י בֹכֶ֑ה
why my=master weep
Even though Hazael is addressing Elisha directly, he is speaking of him in the third person as my lord to show respect. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in a respectful form in the second person. Alternate translation: [Why are you, my lord, weeping]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

See the discussion in the introduction to 2 Kings of how the author and characters may speak of “the sons of” a person to mean the nation or tribe that consists of his descendants. Alternate translation: [to the Israelites]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

Elisha is speaking as if Hazael will actually send these cities into fire. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [you will set on fire] or [you will burn down]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
