OET (OET-LV)For/Because I_am_saying to_you_all that many prophets and kings wanted to_see what you_all are_seeing, and they_ not _saw, and to_hear what you_all_are_hearing, and they_ not _heard.

OET (OET-RV)because I can tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you all are seeing, but they didn’t get to see what you’ve seen, nor to hear what you all have heard.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–24: Jesus sent out seventy-two disciples

In Section 9:1–6 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles to preach and to heal. Here in Section 10:1–24 he sent out a larger group of disciples to different towns. Jesus told this larger group of disciples to visit many towns. They would visit the towns to find out which people and towns would receive Jesus and which would not receive him. Jesus ended his instructions to these disciples by telling them that God would punish the towns where the people did not welcome him.

Notice that in Luke 10:1 there is a textual issue concerning the number of disciples Jesus sent. You should make a decision about this textual issue before you decide on the heading for this section.

Another possible heading for this section is:

Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples to preach and to heal people

Luke is the only gospel writer who wrote about this event. However, there are parallel passages for some of the verses in this section in Matthew 9:37–38, 10:7–16, and 11:21–23.Marshall, p. 412.

10:24a

For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it,

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces another fact that emphasizes how blessed the disciples were to see Jesus and what he did as the Messiah (10:23). This fact is that even important leaders of the past did not have the opportunity to see him.

Connect 10:24a to 10:23b in a natural way in your language. In some languages a connector may not be needed. For example:

I tell you, many prophets and kings… (NCV)

I tell you: Jesus often used the words I tell you to begin a statement that he wanted to emphasize. He was asking people to listen with extra attention. Some ways to show the emphasis are:

I can guarantee (GW)

I assure you

If you have another way in your language to emphasize a statement like this, consider using it here.

many prophets and kings desired to see what you see: Many of the Jewish leaders who lived long before Jesus was born had wanted to see the Messiah and what he would do.

prophets: The word prophets refers to men and women who spoke on behalf of God. They told people what God revealed to them. Some ways to translate prophets are:

spokesmen for God

people who speak God’s words

God’s message-speakers

See how you translated the word prophets in 9:8a. See also prophet in the Glossary.

but did not see it: The prophets and kings of ancient times never saw the Messiah during the time they lived on earth.

10:24b

and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

and to hear what you hear but did not hear it: The prophets and kings of old times had also wanted to hear the things that the Messiah taught people. But they were not able to hear what the Messiah taught, because they died long before Jesus was born.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ οὐκ εἶδαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγω Γάρ ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοί προφῆται καί βασιλεῖς ἠθέλησαν ἰδεῖν ἅ ὑμεῖς βλέπετε καί οὐκ εἶδαν καί ἀκοῦσαι ἅ ἀκούετε καί οὐκ ἤκουσαν)

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could give the reason why the prophets and kings did not see these things. Alternate translation: [but could not see them because they lived before this time]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἃ ἀκούετε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγω Γάρ ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοί προφῆται καί βασιλεῖς ἠθέλησαν ἰδεῖν ἅ ὑμεῖς βλέπετε καί οὐκ εἶδαν καί ἀκοῦσαι ἅ ἀκούετε καί οὐκ ἤκουσαν)

The phrase what you hear probably refers to the teachings of Jesus. Alternate translation: [the things that you have heard me say]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγω Γάρ ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοί προφῆται καί βασιλεῖς ἠθέλησαν ἰδεῖν ἅ ὑμεῖς βλέπετε καί οὐκ εἶδαν καί ἀκοῦσαι ἅ ἀκούετε καί οὐκ ἤκουσαν)

If it would be helpful to your readers, you could give the reason why the prophets and kings did not hear these things. Alternate translation: [but could not hear them because they lived before this time]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
