OET (OET-LV)and to_this woman she_was a_sister being_called Maria/(Miryām), who also having_been_seated_beside at the feet the of_Yaʸsous, was_hearing the message of_him.

OET (OET-RV)She had a sister named Maria who was also sitting there on the floor by Yeshua’s feet listening to his teaching.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:38–42: Jesus visited Martha and Mary

Jesus and his disciples continued to travel from place to place. During their travels, Jesus went to the home of two sisters, Martha and Mary. Their brother was Lazarus. This short section shows how the two sisters considered different things to be important. It also tells what Jesus thought about those things.

Some other examples for section headings are:

Jesus’ Visit with Martha and Mary

At the Home of Martha and Mary (NIV)

This story occurs only in Luke.

10:39a

She had a sister named Mary,

She had a sister named Mary: Mary was probably Martha’s younger sister. They had the same parents. We do not know whether Martha had any other sisters. They had at least one brother, Lazarus (see John 11:1).

In some languages it is natural to use a more specific term such as “younger sister” to refer to Mary here. In other languages it is natural to use a general term such as “sibling” or “younger sibling.” Use a natural kinship term in your language.

10:39b

who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message.

sat at the Lord’s feet: Jewish people often used the phrase “sat at his feet” to describe a disciple/student listening to his religious teacher. Students often sat on the ground or on the floor around the teacher while he sat and taught them. This expressed the students’ humility and eagerness to learn. Some other ways to translate this expression are:

sat down beside the Lord’s feet

sat down on the floor near the Lord

the Lord’s: There is a textual issue here. Some Greek manuscripts have “the Lord.” The BSB, NIV, RSV, ESV, GNT, NLT, GW, NET NJB, CEV, NASB, and REB follow these manuscripts. Other Greek manuscripts have “Jesus.” The NCV and KJV follow these manuscripts. The reading “the Lord” is recommended, but both options have strong support. (See Swanson, p. 198; Blight 2007a, pp. 486–87; and TRT, p. 223.) However, in this context the choice may involve a need to refer to Jesus in a clear and natural way in the translation. In some languages it may be more natural to use a pronoun that refers back to the first noun that refers to Jesus in this section. In that case, some translators may need to introduce the term “the Lord” along with “Jesus” in 12:38a. For information about how to translate the title Lord, see the note at 10:1a.

listening to His message: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as listening to His message is more literally “listening to his word.” It refers to the things that Jesus was teaching about God. Other people besides Mary were probably also listening to him teach. These people may have included Jesus’ disciples and any other guests.

Some ways to translate listening to His message here are:

listening to him teach (NCV)

listening to God’s words that he was telling people

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-participants

καὶ τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφὴ καλουμένη Μαριάμ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφή καλουμένη Μαριάμ ἥ καί παρακαθεσθεῖσα πρός τούς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἤκουεν τόν λόγον αὐτοῦ)

This introduces Mary as a new character. Alternate translation: [Now Martha had a sister whose name was Mary]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

καλουμένη Μαριάμ

˓being˒_called Mary

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [whose name was Mary]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

παρακαθεσθεῖσα πρὸς τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

˓having_been˒_seated_beside (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφή καλουμένη Μαριάμ ἥ καί παρακαθεσθεῖσα πρός τούς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἤκουεν τόν λόγον αὐτοῦ)

This was the customary and respectful position for a learner at this time. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [she sat respectfully on the floor near Jesus to learn from him]

Note 4 topic: translate-textvariants

τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

the ˱of˲_Jesus

See the discussion of textual issues at the end of the General Notes to this chapter to decide whether to use this reading in your translation, or another reading, “the Lord.” The note below discusses a translation issue in that reading, for those who decide to include it.

τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

the ˱of˲_Jesus

If you use the variant reading “the Lord” at this place in your translation, you may wish to indicate that this is referring to Jesus by a respectful title. Alternate translation: [the Lord Jesus]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἤκουεν τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ

˓was˒_hearing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφή καλουμένη Μαριάμ ἥ καί παρακαθεσθεῖσα πρός τούς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἤκουεν τόν λόγον αὐτοῦ)

Luke uses the term word to describe what Jesus said while he was at Martha’s house. Alternate translation: [and listened to what he said] or [and listened to him teaching]
