OET (OET-LV)And he said:
The one having_done the mercy with him.
And the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) said to_him:
Be_going and you be_doing likewise.

OET (OET-RV)“The one who cared for him,” replied the lawyer.
¶ Then you go and do the same,Yeshua told him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:25–37: Jesus told a story to show us who our neighbors are

One day as Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he stopped to teach people. An expert in the Jewish law was there and asked him a question. The expert asked what he should do to obtain eternal life. He and Jesus discussed this question and agreed that a person must love God and love his neighbor. Then the expert asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus answered him with a story that was a parable.

In the story robbers attacked a man and left him bleeding on a road. Two Jewish religious leaders passed the man without helping him. Then a man from the province of Samaria came and helped the man. People from Samaria were called Samaritans. The Jews despised Samaritans, so Jesus’ story surprised the Jews.

The person who treated the injured man with love, as a neighbor should, was a Samaritan. The Jewish religious leaders did not show love to the man. Most Jews considered only their fellow Jews to be their neighbors, but by this parable Jesus taught that all human beings are neighbors. We must love every other human being.

Some other possible section headings are:

The parable about the good foreigner

Who is my neighbor?

The Good Samaritan

Luke is the only gospel writer who includes this parable.

10:37a

“The one who showed him mercy,” replied the expert in the law.

The one who showed him mercy: There is an ellipsis here. The full clause is:

His neighbor was the one who had mercy on him.

The one who had mercy on him was his neighbor.

Use a clause structure that is natural in your language for answering a question like this.

showed him mercy: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as showed him mercy means “acted mercifully toward him.” Some other ways to say this are:

The one who had mercy on him. (NIV)

The one who showed pity towards him. (NJB)

The one who was kind enough to help him. (GW)

10:37b

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

In this part of the verse Jesus responded to the answer that the law expert gave him. Jesus’ response showed that he agreed with the answer. In some languages it may be helpful to make this explicit. For example:

Yes, now go… (NLT)

Go and do likewise: In Greek, the clause that the BSB translates as Go and do likewise is literally “Go and/also you do likewise.” The Greek pronoun “you” is emphatic. The meaning of the clause is probably that the lawyer also should act in the same way as the Samaritan had. Consider whether your language has a natural way to express this emphasis. For example:

You go, then, and do the same. (GNT)

I agree. As for you, you should also go and follow his example.

Go: Jesus did not say where the law expert was to Go. He probably meant “go on your way.” Translate this command in a way that does not sound disrespectful or harsh.

do likewise: The Greek command that the BSB translates as do likewise means “act in the same way” or “follow his/this example.” For example:

do what he did (NCV)

imitate his example (GW)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πορεύου καὶ σὺ ποίει ὁμοίως

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ εἶπεν Ὁ ποιήσας τό ἔλεος μετʼ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Δέ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πορεύου καί σύ ποίει ὁμοίως)

The implication is that the lawyer has given the correct answer. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly, and you could also indicate what do likewise means. Alternate translation: [You are right. In the same way, you should also be a neighbor to people who need your help]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:30-37 Jesus’ parable shows that true neighbors love even their enemies (10:29). Authentic spirituality is not based on ethnic identity or religious associations, but on love for God and for others.
