SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:18–30: It is hard for rich people to enter God’s kingdom

The theme of this section is similar in some ways to the theme of the preceding section. In both sections Jesus talked about entering the kingdom of God. This section also contrasts with the preceding one. In that section the children represent humble people who easily depend on God and welcome his rule/reign. The ruler in this section represents people who are rich and powerful. It is very difficult for such people to welcome God’s reign and submit to it.

The ruler asked Jesus how he could obtain eternal life. Jesus told him to obey God’s commands. Among the Jews, this was a well-known answer to the question of how to obtain eternal life. The ruler said that he had obeyed God’s commands since he was a child. Then Jesus told him to sell what he had, give the money to the poor, and become his disciple. But the ruler valued his riches too much to do that. Then Jesus said that it is very hard for rich people to enter God’s kingdom.

At the end of the section Jesus promised that people who left their possessions and family behind to serve him would receive great rewards.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus taught that riches make it difficult to obtain eternal life

A Rich Man’s Question (NCV)

The rich young man (NJB)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 19:16–30 and Mark 10:17–31.

18:30a

will fail to receive many times more in this age—

will fail to receive: See the note on 18:29b–30a for translation suggestions.

many times more: The phrase many times more implies a comparison. Jesus compared the reward the disciples will receive to what they left behind. The phrase indicates that what they will receive was far more valuable and greater than what they gave up to follow him. In some languages it may be necessary to make the comparison more explicit. For example:

many times as much as he left

very much more than he gave up

in this age: The phrase in this age is literally “in this time.” It refers to the present time while people are living on earth. Other ways to say it are:

in this life (NCV)

in this present life (JBP)

18:30b

and in the age to come, eternal life.”

and in the age to come, eternal life: The phrase in the age to come refers to the time after a person has finished living on earth. The phrase eternal life was also used in 18:18, where the ruler asked Jesus what he should do to receive it. Here Jesus assured the disciples that people who left what they had for the sake of God’s kingdom will receive eternal life. After they die, they will live forever with God.

This is the final clause of a long sentence. In some languages it may be best to repeat the subject and verb of the clause. For example:

And in the future world they will have eternal life. (CEV)

And in the age that is coming, they will have life forever. (NCV)

They will also live forever with God after they die.

General Comments on 18:29–30

In these verses Jesus spoke about the people who left home and family for him. He used third person forms: “he, she, the one(s), anyone/everyone.” Peter and the other disciples were some of the people whom Jesus was talking about. So in some languages it may be more natural to use “you(plur)” in these verses. For example:

Jesus said to the disciples, “I tell you(plur) the truth, none of you(plur) who have left home, wives, brothers, parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come you(plur) will receive eternal life.”

In some languages it may be more natural to use more than one sentence. For example:

Jesus said to the disciples, “I tell you(plur) the truth, some of you(plur) have left your homes. Some have left wives, brothers, parents, or children. Anyone who has done this for the sake of the kingdom of God will certainly receive many times as much in this age. Then in the age to come you(plur) will receive eternal life.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

ὃς οὐχὶ μὴ ἀπολάβῃ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅς οὐχί μή ἀπολάβῃ πολλαπλασίονα ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ καί ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ ζωήν αἰώνιον)

This is the conclusion of the double negative statement that began in the previous verse with “there is no one who has left.” If you started to translate it there as a positive statement, you could finish that translation here. Alternate translation: [will certainly receive]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ & ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ

in ¬the time this & in the age ¬which coming

Jesus is using the word time in the same figurative sense as the word age in [16:8](../16/08.md), to mean the long period of time defined by the duration of the created world; by association, it means the world itself. Here, Jesus is using the word age similarly to mean the new world that God will introduce after the end of this present world. Alternate translation: [in this present world … in the world to come]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

καὶ ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ, ζωὴν αἰώνιον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅς οὐχί μή ἀπολάβῃ πολλαπλασίονα ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ καί ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ ζωήν αἰώνιον)

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. you could supply these words from what he says earlier in the sentence. Alternate translation: [and they will also receive eternal life in the world to come]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:30 repaid many times over in this life: Their reward would not necessarily be physical, but they would enjoy the blessings that come from spiritual wholeness and a right relationship with God.
