SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 18:35–43: Jesus healed a blind beggar

As Jesus and his disciples continued their journey to Jerusalem, they came to Jericho. A blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. He asked Jesus to make him able to see again. Luke does not mention the beggar’s name, but Mark mentions that his name was Bartimaeus. Jesus healed him and told him that the reason he could now see was because he believed in Jesus.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus Heals a Blind Man (NCV)

Jesus gives sight to a blind man

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:27–31, 20:29–34 and Mark 10:46–52.

18:39a

Those who led the way admonished him to be silent,

Those who led the way: The phrase Those who led the way refers to the people at the front of the crowd that was traveling with Jesus to Jerusalem.

admonished him to be silent: This phrase indicates that the people scolded the blind man by telling him to stop calling out for help. In some languages it may be natural to use direct speech here. For example:

they told him, “Stop shouting, be quiet!”

18:39b

but he cried out all the louder,

but he cried out all the louder: The phrase cried out all the louder indicates that the blind man shouted even louder. For example:

But he shouted even louder (GW)

18:39c

“Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Son of David, have mercy on me!: Here the blind man repeated the same call for help as in 18:38.

uW Translation Notes:

οἱ προάγοντες

the_‹ones› going_before

Alternate translation: [the people who were walking ahead of Jesus]

ἐπετίμων αὐτῷ, ἵνα σιγήσῃ

˓were˒_warning ˱to˲_him that ˱he˲_˓may˒_keep_silent

Alternate translation: [kept telling him not to shout]

πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἔκραζεν

˱by˲_much more ˓was˒_crying_out

This could mean: (1) “he shouted even louder.” (2) “he called out even more persistently.”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Υἱὲ Δαυείδ, ἐλέησόν με

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί οἱ προάγοντες ἐπετίμων αὐτῷ ἵνα σιγήσῃ αὐτός Δέ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἔκραζεν Υἱέ Δαυίδ ἐλέησον μέ)

See how you decided to translate this phrase in [18:38](../18/38.md). Alternate translation: [Messiah, please have mercy on me and heal me]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:35-43 This account again demonstrates Jesus’ care for the poor and marginalized in Israel. It reminds the reader that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah (18:38), shortly before he enters Jerusalem as king (19:28-44).
